We are currently seeking a skilled 100% remote Sales Tax Specialist to join our team on a temporary basis (6 weeks but could extend) to address urgent clean-up work following recent staffing changes. This role supports our Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) clients in sectors such as food, beverage, and manufacturing—many of whom sell high volumes of products through retail outlets.
The ideal candidate will have 7+ years of experience in sales and use tax compliance, with a strong background in multi-state tax requirements. Expertise in Shopify, Avalara, and TaxJar is essential, with Shopify serving as the primary ecommerce platform used for sales tax calculations.
What You’ll Do:
- Conduct nexus studies to determine where the company must collect and remit sales tax based on sales activities, product types, and geographic locations.
- Manage state tax registrations, remittances, and back filings to ensure compliance.
- Assist with clean-up of existing sales tax issues and ongoing compliance monitoring.
- Work closely with ecommerce platforms and tax automation tools (Shopify, Avalara, TaxJar) to manage tax calculations and reporting.
- Support collaboration across teams to ensure accurate tax application and filings.
Position Requirements:
- Minimum 7 years of sales and use tax experience, ideally within the CPG, food & beverage, or manufacturing sectors.
- Strong understanding of multi-state sales tax laws, including nexus rules that vary by product and location (zip code level).
- Proficiency with Shopify, and tax automation platforms Avalara and TaxJar
- Background in tax compliance, with a focus on back filings and registration processes.
- Industry-agnostic experience welcomed but preference for CPG background.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Economics, or related field preferred; CPA not required.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote role with minimal supervision.
