Description

About the Position

Customers come to Helix with hard motion problems: tight envelopes, high loads, demanding accuracy and life requirements. As Sales Application Engineer, you work directly with their engineering teams, buyers and program managers to understand the application, size and specify the right solution, and see it through to production.

You're the technical resource on inbound requests. You partner with our Business Development Managers and Inside Sales team so customers get fast, accurate answers and quotes backed by real engineering judgment. You'll spend your time solving problems, not cold calling. Your work shapes what we build, how fast we respond, and how much customers trust us.

Core Responsibilities

Technical and application support

  • Serve as the technical point of contact on inbound customer inquiries
  • Size and select ball screws, linear actuators, and motion assemblies based on load, speed, life, and accuracy requirements
  • Review customer prints and requirements; recommend design changes early in the program
  • Work with Helix Engineering on custom and modified designs and confirm manufacturability

Quoting and order flow

  • Build accurate quotes and proposals that balance technical and commercial needs
  • Work with Inside Sales and Customer Success to keep quoting and order flow moving
  • Make sure technical requirements are clearly captured before orders move into production

Customer and sales team partnership

  • Partner with Business Development Managers and Inside Sales to support opportunities with technical expertise
  • Build working relationships with customer engineering teams at OEM accounts
  • Support distributor onboarding and technical training

Cross-functional collaboration

  • Connect customers with Engineering, Operations, and Quality to resolve issues
  • Bring customer feedback back to Engineering and Product teams

Who You Are

  • Engineer first. You like hard technical problems and enjoy talking to the people who have them.
  • Curious about the application. You ask why before recommending what.
  • Customer-focused. You balance responsiveness with engineering and production realities.
  • Clear communicator. You can explain a technical trade-off to an engineer, a buyer, or a program manager.
  • Manufacturing-minded. You understand drawings, tolerances, and how parts actually get made.
  • Organized. You keep multiple quotes, applications, and deadlines moving with accuracy.
  • Relationship-builder. You earn trust by turning challenges into solutions.

What You Bring

  • 2+ years in technical sales, application engineering, or customer-facing support in a manufacturing environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; equivalent experience will be considered
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks and CAD files
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, a CRM (Salesforce preferred), and an ERP (Epicor or similar)
  • Experience with motion control, ball screws, or linear systems (nice to have)

What Success Looks Like

  • Speed: 95% of quote requests answered within 24 hours
  • Accuracy: 98%+ of quotes issued without rework
  • Conversion: 50%+ of quotes converted to orders within pricing guidelines
  • Engagement: quarterly touch-points with our top 20 accounts and 90%+ customer satisfaction
  • Collaboration: active participation in cross-functional meetings, with customer needs clearly communicated
  • Growth: new customers and markets that add to the pipeline
