The Safety Programs Engineer develops BETA's Safety Management System, leads hazard identification and safety risk assessments, and collaborates with various teams to ensure compliance and continuous improvement in safety practices.
Summary Generated by Built In
At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.

The Safety Programs Engineer supports the development, maturation, and day-to-day operation of BETA’s Safety Management System (SMS) and Continued Operational Safety (COS) programs. Working closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customer support teams, the Safety Programs Engineer leads the integration of safety risk management into day-to-day operations and product lifecycle activities. The Safety Programs Engineer also assists with regulatory engagement and compliance efforts, helping ensure the SMS and COS programs meet FAA requirements and industry best practices as the organization grows.

Success in this role requires comfort with ambiguity, a collaborative mindset, and a practical, continuous-improvement approach to building an effective and sustainable safety culture.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Develop and maintain safety documentation (e.g. Safety Management System Manual, Continued Operational Safety Plan, Safety Policy), including defining new processes, piloting them within teams, gathering feedback, and iterating to improve effectiveness
  • Define practical safety analysis approaches aligned with applicable standards and regulatory guidance (e.g., ARP4754, ARP4761, ASTM F3230, Small Airplane Risk Analysis (SARA) Handbook, AC 39-8 - Continued Airworthiness Assessments of Powerplant and Auxiliary Power Unit Installations of Transport Category Airplanes).
  • Lead and facilitate hazard identification, safety risk assessments, and development of mitigation strategies for design, manufacturing, and operational activities, while helping teams adopt safety risk management concepts and apply them consistently
  • Support the intake, triage, and assessment of in-service safety reports and operational events, working with cross-functional teams to evaluate risk, identify trends, and feed lessons learned back into appropriate teams and processes
  • Support development and tracking of safety-related corrective action plans.
  • Define and monitor safety performance indicators and analyze safety data to identify trends, emerging risks, and control effectiveness
  • Assist in preparing the organization for FAA reviews and oversight by helping define compliance approaches, supporting internal readiness activities, and adapting processes as regulatory expectations and organizational needs become clearer
  • Design, develop, and deliver safety training that supports practical application and cultural buy-in, adjusting content as processes and organizational maturity evolve
  • Assist with safety communications and promotion activities to encourage teammate engagement and reporting
  • Serve as a knowledgeable mentor for SMS and COS processes and best practices

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 4–7 years of relevant experience in aerospace, product safety, or systems engineering
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the development or implementation of new processes or programs, including piloting, evaluating effectiveness, and iterating based on feedback and data
  • Experience facilitating cross-functional discussions (working with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, quality, or customer support) and documenting technical or safety analyses
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly document processes, develop work instructions, and present status or recommendations to diverse audiences

Above and Beyond Qualifications

  • Direct experience supporting or operating an SMS within an aircraft design, manufacturing, or operational environment
  • Familiarity with FAA regulatory frameworks, including 14 CFR 5 Safety Management Systems and 14 CFR 21.3 Continued Operational Safety concepts
  • Experience with hazard analysis, safety investigations, or risk assessment methodologies
  • Experience working with in-service data, safety reporting systems, or corrective action tracking tools
