RESPONSIBLE TO: Chief Clinical Officer (CCO)

RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS

A. Related to Organization:

1. Knows and interprets to all nursing personnel the philosophy, purposes, policies, and standards of the Hospital and Nursing Service Department.

2. Sets standards of quality nursing care in cooperation with the Director of Nursing Service.

3. Is aware of the legal aspects of nursing, demonstrating this in his/her assignments, supervision, teaching, and his/her own direct nursing care.

4. Maintains awareness and practice of hospital safety, fire, and disaster plans.

B. Related to Interpersonal Relationships:

1. Meets periodically with the CCO to discuss nursing care and future planning.

2. Cooperates with other disciplines and hospital departments in implementing programs in the interest of the patient's welfare.

3. Keeps CCO notified of reportable items and problems.

4. Coordinates activities with other non-nursing departments, solves minor problems with other departments, and refers major problems to the CCO.

5. Investigates complaints of patients and discusses the same with the Risk Manager or CCO.

C. Related to Teaching:

1. Assists in the orientation of new staff assigned to Nursing Department.

2. Assists in educational programs.

D. Related to Patient Care:

1. Assumes responsibility for all nursing activities related directly or indirectly to patient care.

2. Directs, coordinates, and supervises nursing personnel.

3. Evaluates the quality of nursing care and offers suggestions for improvement.

4. Assists in developing a staffing pattern to meet the needs of patients.

5. Makes rounds of the nursing unit to:

A. ascertain quality of patient care,

B. to evaluate the environment for optimum comfort and safety of the patient, and

C. to determine needs for improving nursing service for patients and the working environment for personnel, giving direct care as necessary.

E. Related to Documentation:

1. Responsible for the accurate reporting and recording of patients' symptoms, reactions, progress and nursing care given.

2. Implements good thorough charting techniques, especially admission and discharge notes.

3. Responsible for the interpretation and execution of doctors' orders.

4. Maintains records according to hospital and nursing service policies

F. Related to Budgeting:

1. Provides for adequate use of supplies and equipment.

2. Imports patient care charges when necessary.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

A. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing

B. Currently registered with the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners.

C. Previous satisfactory work record.

D. Will keep BLS and ACLS current with this education provided by the hospital.

E. Full-time employees are recommended to successfully complete TNCC and ENPC provided outside the hospital at no expense to the employee.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Physical requirements:

1. Good physical and mental health.

2. Occasional lifting with assistance is required.

3. Adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills required.

4. Talking and hearing is essential in instructing and supervising nursing personnel.

5. Near visual acuity required to work with charts and records, able to use computer skills for EHR.

B. Professional requirements:

1. Promotes standards and principles of professional organization.

2. Competent in supervision.

3. Has vision in planning and adaptability to change.

4. Has interest in research and development in nursing.

5. Onsite position.

Skills Required

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Currently registered with the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners
  • Previous satisfactory work record
  • Maintain current BLS and ACLS certifications (education provided by hospital)
  • Full-time employees recommended to complete TNCC and ENPC (provided externally)
  • Good physical and mental health
