HOURS & SHIFT REQUIREMENTS:  Full Time position, 40 hours per week; 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

GENERAL SUMMARY

Pre-operative physical assessment of the surgical patient to include, but not limited to, vital signs, head to toe assessment including auscultation of  lungs, heart sounds, abdominal, circulation and peripheral I.V. starts. Review pre-op history and complete assessment flow chart.  Physical transportation of patient via wheelchair or cart to surgical holding area.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Review of patient history and pre-operative chart.  

2.    Completion of patient physical assessment.

3.    Completion of intra departmental transfer sheet and assessment flow chart.

4.    Communication with O.R. staff regarding patient transfer.

5.    Conducts verbal or written hand off communication with O.R. staff. 
 

Qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1.    Communication for extended periods of time with patients and family.

2.    Time constraints are a source of pressure due to require turn-around time monitoring.

3.    Will work in an office with co-workers where traffic may be constant, subjecting your work to interruptions, which can produce stress and fatigue. 

4.    Ability to physically transfer patients via wheelchair, stretcher to stretcher with use of slider board if needed, with or without other staff’s assistance.

5.          Physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks:

•    Floor to waist - 40 pounds
•    14” to waist - 50 pounds
•    Waist to shoulder - 30 pounds
•    Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
•    Carry 40 pounds 30 feet
•    Push 40 pounds/force 30 feet
•    Pull 40 pounds/force 10 feet
•    Carry 20# away from body for 30ft

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to the Director of Pre-op Services.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1.    Registered Nurse with a strong background in peri-operative surgical services.

2.    Knowledge of surgical procedures offered at GAHHS.

3.    Knowledge of anesthesia, medications and side effects.

4.    Excellent computer skills.

5.    Excellent communication skills.

6.    ACLS/PALS certification.

7.    Excellent physical assessment skills.

INFECTION EXPOSURE RISK LEVEL

Category I – Maximal Risk - This job usually involves contact with patient or patient specimens. Exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue is possible. The Hepatitis B vaccine shall be made available

WORKING CONDITIONS

1.    Time constraints are a source of pressure due to required turn-around time monitoring. 

2.    Direct patient care with many adverse or hazardous working conditions.  There is exposure to noises and personal space is limited. 

3.    Will work in an environment where traffic may be constant, subjecting your work to interruptions, which can produce stress and fatigue.  
 

Skills Required

  • Registered Nurse licensure with strong peri-operative surgical experience
  • Ability to perform comprehensive physical assessments and auscultation of lungs and heart
  • Ability to start peripheral IVs
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, anesthesia, medications and side effects
  • ACLS and PALS certification
  • Excellent communication and hand-off skills (verbal and written)
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to physically transfer patients (wheelchair/stretcher) and perform specified lifting/pushing/pulling tasks
