About the position
The
Temporary Statistician will provide statistical support to Bean Program by
measuring and analyzing research data, ensuring data quality and preparing
statical reports to support breeding decisions. The incumbent will work closely
with scientists, researchers and technicians to generate accurate, timely and
reliable statistical analyses for field trials and research activities.
The
Temporary Statistician is responsible for planning, managing, analyzing and
interpreting experimental survey data generated from breeding research
activities. The position supports research teams through statistical
methodologies, database management, data quality assurance and preparation of
technical reports. The role contributes to scientific publication within the
Bean Breeding Program at National and regional levels.
Key
Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Alliance scientists
and external research partners on Statistical analysis and research planning.
- Work Closely with Bean Breeders,
researchers, technicians, data managers and project coordinators.
- Provide technical support on
experimental design and data analysis to project teams.
- Participate in project meetings,
scientific discussions, workshops and capacity building activities.
- Communicate statistical findings
through presentations, reports and technical documentations.
- Help with data management processes
including data collection, entry, cleaning, validation, storage, and reporting.
- Develop and improve data management
systems and standard operating procedures for breeding trials and crossing
activities.
- Ensure data quality, consistency,
traceability, and accessibility across breeding experiments and locations.
- Perform GxE analysis, combined
analysis, GGE biplots and yield performance evaluations for genotype selection
and advancement.
- Prepare and supervise field layouts
for planting, crossing blocks, nurseries, and breeding trials to ensure proper
experimental design and implementation.
- Coordinate and involve in field
operations and work closely with field technicians to ensure accurate trial
establishment and data collection.
- Manage and involve in crossing
activities including planning, monitoring, harvesting of F1, F2, F3 crosses,
advancement of breeding populations, and proper documentation of breeding
progress.
- Maintain accurate records of crossing
activities, nursery advancement, harvested materials, and seed inventory.
- Work closely with breeders,
researchers, and technical teams to solve breeding data challenges and improve
research workflows.
- Perform
any other statistical duties assigned by the supervisor.
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics,
Biostatistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Agricultural Statistics or related
quantitative field.
- At least 1-2 years of professional
experience in statistical analysis, preferably within agricultural research or
related fields
- Experience analyzing experimental
and survey data.
- Experience supporting research
projects using statistical software.
- Experience working with
Multidisciplinary research teams is desirable.
- Knowledge of CGIAR or international
agricultural research environments is an added advantage.
Technical Competencies
- Strong Knowledge of Statistical
methods and experimental design
- Proficiency in R and other
Statistical software.
- Excellent data management and
quality assurance skills.
- Experience with database management
and data visualization.
- Ability to analyse large datasets
and interpret statistical outputs.
- Knowledge of agricultural research
and breeding trials is an added advantage.
- Strong analytical and
problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal
communications skills
- Ability to prepare technical reposts
and scientific documentation.
- Strong organizational skills with
attention to detail.
- Ability to work
independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- High
level of integrity and confidentiality when handling research data.
Terms of employment
This position
is a Temporary Position based in Arusha,
Tanzania. The initial fixed contract
will be for 6 Months.
