Snapshot
Our team is a small, collaborative research engineering team based in Mountain View, California, specializing in the development of accessible and highly-usable foundational models + infrastructure. Our primary aim is to power and accelerate the research being done at Google DeepMind by developing highly-usable infrastructure and tools. We are dedicated to developing solutions that meet researcher needs, provide scalable + highly-usable infrastructure, and simplify and accelerate LLM research across the broad portfolio of GDM projects.
About us
Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.
The role
As a Research Engineer, you will develop software to advance cutting-edge research ideas. You will collaborate closely with our team of Research Scientists and Research Engineers to understand and unblock every step of the research process - from ideation, to early prototyping and validation, to publication and/or integration with products. You will develop key software and infrastructure powering research, and will become a go-to expert in the tools and systems for LLM research. This is a unique opportunity to have horizontal impact across the many research areas that make up the GDM project portfolio, and to accelerate the development of SOTA LLM research.
Key responsibilities
We are looking for a research engineer who is interested in contributing to core code, tools, and infrastructure that enables and is close to LLM research.
- Develop software for the research community, supporting immediate stakeholders in GDM, while keeping an eye out for possible contributions to the broader community (3P ecosystem, Jax, etc.)
- Contribute to and drive major efforts across research codebases, including working with researchers directly, working with product teams and senior engineers to debug and optimize code, and to add new research capabilities.
- Become a go-to expert in the tools and systems for research, e.g. Gemma, Jax, Data Preprocessing, etc.
- Write documentation and tutorials for a diverse audience including Googlers, interns + student researchers, and possibly the external community.
About you
In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineer at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:
- Experience with Python, JAX, LLM datasets/benchmarks/metrics, etc.
- Ability to independently and quickly develop research or product prototypes.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and simply to a broad audience.
- Excellent collaboration skills.
In addition, the following would be an advantage:
- Experience with the research lifecycle, including possibly a published paper or two.
- Experience with Google research infrastructure, including Jax, Gemma, etc.
- Research experience with LLMs.

What We Do
We’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.
Our long term aim is to solve intelligence, developing more general and capable problem-solving systems, known as artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Guided by safety and ethics, this invention could help society find answers to some of the world’s most pressing and fundamental scientific challenges.
We have a track record of breakthroughs in fundamental AI research, published in journals like Nature, Science, and more. Our programs have learned to diagnose eye diseases as effectively as the world’s top doctors, to save 30% of the energy used to keep data centres cool, and to predict the complex 3D shapes of proteins - which could one day transform how drugs are invented.
