Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.
The RoleWe are seeking a Robotics Research Engineer to join our Robotics Engineering team. As a Robotics Research Engineer you will apply state-of-the-art AI approaches such as Visual-Language-Action models to the robotics domain, integrate robotic platforms, run experiments, develop software libraries and solve complex, stimulating robotics problems. You will work on making our latest models and research results available to high profile partners under our Trusted Tester Program (TTP). This includes developing our software ecosystem, engaging with partners to understand their applications, interface robotics platforms with agents, upstreaming data, fine-tune models and engaging with research teams to improve model performance.
Key responsibilities:- Apply and improve state-of-the-art robotic agents.
- Develop libraries and Software Development Toolkits (SDKs) for the interaction of agents and robots.
- Integrate state-of-the-art robotic platforms for internal and external use cases.
- Jointly work with Research Scientists to improve our models.
- Coordinate with our internal robotics lab and external customers on data collection and model deployment.
- Develop and track performance and data collection metrics.
In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineer at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:
- BSc/MSc/PhD degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, or equivalent.
- Experience in developing and/or applying state-of-the-art models (LLMs, VLAs etc.) to robotics
- Familiarity with robotics systems and debugging complex issues. Must have motivation to work with real robots.
- Good knowledge of either Python or C++.
- A collaborative mindset, as this role requires close collaboration with software engineers, AI researchers, external partners and other stakeholders.
In addition, the following would be an advantage:
- Familiarity with open-source software and tools, especially related to deployment.
- Expertise in using large datasets with deep neural networks to make real robots useful.
- Familiarity with ROS2 (Robot Operating System 2), robot manufacturers’ APIs, or a willingness to learn.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure.
- A real passion for AI impacting real world robots!

What We Do
We’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.
Our long term aim is to solve intelligence, developing more general and capable problem-solving systems, known as artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Guided by safety and ethics, this invention could help society find answers to some of the world’s most pressing and fundamental scientific challenges.
We have a track record of breakthroughs in fundamental AI research, published in journals like Nature, Science, and more. Our programs have learned to diagnose eye diseases as effectively as the world’s top doctors, to save 30% of the energy used to keep data centres cool, and to predict the complex 3D shapes of proteins - which could one day transform how drugs are invented.
