Lab/Area:Corces LabDescription:
Research Associate I - Corces Lab
Description
We are looking for a research associate to join our lab group within the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease. The candidate will be a critical member of a team of biologists working to understand the role of the epigenome in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The position will require the candidate to learn and perform basic and advanced cellular and molecular biology techniques including high throughput sequencing, single-cell assays, CRISPR-based editing, and iPSC-based cellular differentiation assays.
This position will be research-based and fully wet-lab with multiple opportunities for publication. The skills and experiences acquired from this position would provide a useful background for future pursuits in biological research-based graduate education and we place a strong emphasis on mentorship of the next generation of scientists. While prior laboratory experience is valuable, we place a greater emphasis on essential personal attributes such as organization, attention to detail, and communication skills. We have an established track record of helping young scientists achieve admission to graduate education programs and apply for and receive fellowships such as the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
More information about the laboratory and its current and past members can be found at www.corceslab.com
Duties & Responsibilities
For day-to-day activities, the candidate will be directly supervised by senior members of the laboratory and will have weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the PI, Dr. Ryan Corces. They will participate in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs and have the freedom to set their own schedule (within reason). As part of the training environment that we provide, the candidate will be encouraged to participate in professional development activities not directly tied to their work such as attending seminars, conferences, workshops, etc. Remote/hybrid work is not permitted.
As noted above, direct prior experience in the relevant techniques is not required. We list below the types of activities one could expect to perform in this position:
- Cell culture including iPSC differentiation
- CRISPR-based editing of cell lines
- Single-cell sequencing assays including single-cell RNA-seq and single-cell ATAC-seq
- Generating high-throughput sequencing libraries for ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, and ChIP-seq
- Designing, implementing and troubleshooting experiments
- Communication of original findings in the form of lab meeting presentations
- Preparation of findings for publication
- Routine laboratory management such as supply ordering, maintenance, and upkeep (5% of total effort)
Qualifications
- AA/AS and 2+ years of relevant experience or BA/BS in a relevant field
What we offer
- Targeted mentorship to help you achieve your goals, both during your tenure in the lab and beyond
- Training in how to think and communicate as a scientist
- Training in scientific techniques in the fields of genomics, neurobiology, and epigenomics
- Opportunities for scientific publication
- Access to Gladstone’s training classes and tools
- Access to Gladstone’s guest scientific lectures from world renowned professors
- Transparent and equitable pay based on Gladstone Institutes’ standardized policies

What We Do
Gladstone's mission is to drive a new era of discovery in disease-oriented science and to mentor tomorrow’s leaders in an inspiring and diverse environment.
Although Gladstone shares traits with other top life science organizations, we pride ourselves on taking uncommon scientific paths to overcoming disease. Our investigators are selected to become authorities in leading or creating new fields, and we work to provide them with resources to explore bold new thoughts, form effective scientific teams, and create or master emerging research technologies that accelerate progress—Gladstone’s special recipe for success that has yielded some of the most important biomedical advances of our time.
Our three disease-focused institutes constitute the core of our discovery engine, but do not operate in isolation. We are seizing unprecedented opportunities for “convergence”—defined as the blending of intellectual and physical assets from multiple scientific disciplines and fields to speed the discovery process in our attack on unsolved health problems that affect almost every human family.
