EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
We are seeking a research assistant to be shared in their efforts to support neuroscience/neuromuscular disease research at the institution. Job responsibilities include conducting and coordinating research, and assisting with zebrafish and mouse husbandry. Coordinating the research laboratory will necessitate organizing research projects, overseeing and training research students, and general laboratory maintenance. Experience in molecular biology techniques (microscopy, protein biochemistry, genotyping/PCR, etc.), cell culture, and animal work is preferred, but not required. Responsibilities regarding animal care and use in research requires working closely with members of the Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) and other researchers to ensure the proper care and use of animals in research. The candidate must be able to multitask, be detail-oriented, and work well independently and in a team environment. The candidate will be evaluated by productivity in moving projects forward and by effectively working with the team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Proficiently performs at least 4-6 experimental techniques (such as tissue culture, western blotting, PCR, biochemical and behavioral assays, etc.). Willing and able to learn new molecular/animal biology techniques. Is responsible for troubleshooting. Trains others in mastered experimental techniques.
• Maintains project data (collection, logging, entry, analysis, reporting) to support lab and student research activities. Assists or manages the preparation of posters, manuscripts and meeting presentations. Presents research findings at meetings. Performs literature reviews as needed to support research projects.
• Performs and oversees general lab maintenance and safety to ensure smooth operation of research. Prepares equipment, special components and reagents for experiments. Performs general equipment monitoring and maintenance including shared zebrafish equipment. 
• Coordinates and oversees zebrafish husbandry specific to research. This can include breeding, monitoring health, and tracking overall zebrafish care.
• Training of students and staff on shared zebrafish experimental equipment.
• General training and communication for students and staff zebrafish research, including organizing monthly zebrafish user meetings. Requires effectively communicating with all zebrafish users (currently two labs) and the LAR.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in a life sciences field, such as biology or chemistry.


Starting Hourly Pay: $21.00

The referenced salary range is based on PCOM good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
