About the Team:
The SCMP sports desk covers a wide range of sports across the region, highlighting the achievements of athletes at all levels. Like those we report on, the team is a combination of all-rounders and specialists, with experience built up from working across the world.
Purpose of the Position:
We are looking for our next young star, a passionate sports fan who wants to take the next steps in their career.
Flexibility will be your super power, and a can-do attitude your default setting. One day you could be covering a press conference announcing the next big event in Hong Kong, the next track work at Sha Tin. You don't need to know everything about sport, or racing, but you must be willing to learn.
If that sounds like you, drop us a line and let's have a chat. There are some big things happening in sport in the region and we're building a team of the best to report on the best.
In this role, you will:
- Support the sport and racing teams in covering the big stories of the day
- Develop your own contacts, find your own stories and build your brand as well as ours
- Discover that no two days are the same. One shift may involve football in the Hong Kong Premier League, or a day of racing at Happy Valley, and another could be interviewing Olympian Siobhan Haughey.
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- Be bilingual, with the ability to speak, read and write in Cantonese and English
- Demonstrate previous experience writing for a university, college or local paper
- While not essential, a journalism qualification is desirable
- Understand the importance of social media in finding stories and expanding our reach
- Be willing to step outside your comfort zone
Work location will be at Causeway Bay office.
