This role requires full time on site presence.

CBC Northwest Territories (NWT) is seeking a full-time, permanent reporter-editor to join our Yellowknife newsroom.

We’re looking for a self-starter who’s able to pitch, research and report stories that are topical and meaningful. You will be part of a small but dynamic team that covers the NWT and beyond for a diverse audience. You will work to deadline daily, gathering, writing, editing and packaging news for video, digital and audio platforms.

The successful candidate will be a strong writer with a background in journalism or a related field. This position also requires a strong team player who understands time management and pays attention to details. You may be asked to work a variety of shifts, including early starts and late finishes and weekends.

Tasks/responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research, write and present original stories for all CBC platforms that will engage and inform our audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events – chasing, gathering, writing and packaging stories for digital, radio, social and video.
  • Regularly present stories on-air on radio and TV, providing background and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts in the Northwest Territories.

Requirements:

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a news and breaking news environment.
  • Knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Strong understanding of reporting for video and audio platforms.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the politics and issues of the Northwest Territories.
  • The ability to speak a language Indigenous to the NWT will be considered a major asset.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
