About the Team:
The SCMP is seeking a seasoned journalist to join our China Military team. You will work alongside a talented group of reporters who cover China’s defence, security, and strategic affairs for a global readership.
Purpose of the Position:
We are looking for a China Reporter to lead, shape, and deliver in-depth, timely, and authoritative coverage of China’s military, defence policy, and related security issues for a worldwide audience. The ideal candidate combines strong reporting instincts with deep understanding of China’s security landscape, regional dynamics, and global implications.In this role, you will:
- Produce original, enterprise reporting and analysis on China’s military affairs, including defence policy, armed forces modernization, geopolitics, military technology, and security challenges.
- Plan and execute long-form features, investigations, and data-led storytelling that illuminate China’s strategic posture and its impact on regional and global security.
- Collaborate with editors, photographers, and data reporters to create multimedia stories for digital, print, and social platforms.
- Translate and contextualize complex defence topics into clear, accessible English for a global audience; ensure accuracy and fairness across both Chinese and English language outputs.
- Mentor and coach junior reporters, review contributed copy, and help set the team’s editorial direction and standards.
- Work under tight deadlines, manage competing priorities, and maintain journalistic integrity, accuracy, and privacy safeguards.
- Travel as required to cover events, briefings, and field reporting assignments, including domestic and international locations.
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- Degree holder in Journalism or related disciplines, with 3 or above years of relevant working experience
- Sound knowledge about mainland China's history and its social, economic and political developments
- Travelling is required
- Willingness to relocate if necessary
Work location will be in Hong Kong/ Beijing
