Position:  Remote Integrated Photonics Engineer

Opportunity Overview:

This is a remote position with an immediate, mission-critical need. Signing bonus available for the right candidate!

We’re looking for a photonics design engineer to help develop a cutting-edge device supporting U.S. national security applications. This role will directly contribute to advanced hardware innovation at the intersection of photonics, quantum-adjacent systems, and next-generation defense capabilities.

If you have experience in integrated photonics design, simulation, or silicon photonics platforms — we want to talk to you!

Position Details

Salary Range: $75,000-$115,000 annually.  The successful candidate’s salary will depend on how many position qualifications the candidate meets, in addition to education and experience.

This is a full-time, remote exempt position.    We will consider candidates located anywhere within the United States.

The successful candidate must be available to start immediately (within two weeks of offer acceptance)

Responsibilities and Duties

This position supports research conducted by the Technergetics Quantum Team. The research includes developing heterogeneous quantum networks with different quantum technologies, utilizing quantum technologies for practical applications such as signal processing and detection, improving quantum systems with novel technologies such as integrated photonics, and utilizing quantum algorithms for improved information analysis and planning. The ideal candidate will:

  • Conduct independent and team-based research to develop and advance key components of a wide-area, heterogeneous quantum network
  • Lead the design, simulation, and optimization of integrated photonic devices and circuits tailored for quantum information processing, sensing, and communication applications
  • Design photonic circuits that support quantum algorithms and protocols, ensuring high fidelity and scalability of quantum systems
  • Interface integrated photonics with light sources, detectors, and control systems, contributing to the development of robust, scalable quantum devices
  • Contribute to system-level design and optimization for efficient data transfer, processing, and quantum entanglement in integrated photonics setups
  • Support photonic tape-out process for integrated photonic circuits, coordinating with fabrication teams to ensure that designs meet specifications and are optimized for fabrication at leading-edge photonic foundries
  • Directly participate in the design and testing of integrated photonic devices, including working with photonic simulation software (e.g. Ansys Lumerical, COMSOL, or similar) performance optimization
  • Use layout software (e.g. GDSFactory, KLayout, or similar) to design integrated photonic circuits
  • Design integrated photonic devices and systems with an emphasis on scalability, reliability, and manufacturability, ensuring compatibility with large-scale quantum systems

Education and Certifications:

This project requires at minimum a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in physics, applied physics, or closely related technical field.  A Master's Degree, Post-Doctoral or PhD in physics, applied physics, or closely related field is strongly preferred.

Required Qualifications:

  • Expertise in the design and simulation of integrated photonic devices and circuits, with a focus on applications for quantum technologies
  • Proven experience with photonic device design software (e.g., Lumerical, COMSOL, ADS, or equivalent)
  • Hands-on experience with integrated photonics tape-outs and fabrication processes, including working with photonic foundries
  • Strong understanding of quantum optics, quantum information science, and how integrated photonics supports quantum computing, communication, and sensing
  • Experience with optical testing and characterization of photonic devices, including techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, and interferometry

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced experience in integrated photonics or quantum technologies
  • Familiarity with advanced photonic integration platforms (e.g., silicon photonics, heterogeneous integration, and/or nonlinear materials)
  • Knowledge of quantum algorithms and protocols relevant to photonic quantum computing and quantum communication
  • Experience with machine learning techniques for optimizing photonic designs or quantum systems
  • Experience using characterization equipment such as wafer probers and electron scanning microscopes.

Clearance:

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and must meet and maintain eligibility requirements for, at minimum, Secret access to classified information.

Travel:

This position is expected to require 5% travel to company or client sites for meetings or conferences.
