We are currently seeking a  Recreation Program Specialist. This position is responsible for coordinating and implementing community-based recreation programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities, including direct care responsibilities.
 
  • Responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating of year-round recreational and social programs, including but not limited to summer programs, sports, outings/travel, aquatics, social programs and special events.
  • Complete intakes, initial assessments and referral services for individuals with disabilities living at home, independently, and in residential settings in both a community and school-based environment. Develop and maintain relationships with local resources to improve referral process.
  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director with recruitment, training and supervision of recreation staff and volunteers.
  • Work cooperatively with families, participants with disabilities and the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services to identify need areas, locate resources and develop programs.
  • Develop inclusive and specialized recreation/leisure programs in conjunction with existing community resources such as: YMCA's athletic clubs, school systems, churches/temples, city recreation departments, etc.
  • Organize teams in conjunction with ongoing Special Olympic programs at the area, sectional and state level.
  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director in composing newsletter information, brochures and special events flyers.
  • Responsible for public speaking engagements to help enhance the program in a variety of ways (financial, staffing, public education; professional development and agency advocacy).
  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director with grant writing and the financial oversight of all programs as required.
  • Attends all mandatory agency training's.
  • Demonstrates and implements knowledge of Communitas policies and standards as well as funding source regulations.
  • Follows HIPPA, security regulations and/or guidelines and maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • High school diploma required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred in a related field or 3 years experience in a recreation program.
  • Minimum one year of directly related experience working with adults with developmental disabilities or experience in recreation/sports activity leadership.
  • Valid MA Driver’s license, acceptable driving record and reliable transportation. Driving is required.
  • Acceptable CORI report and suitable fingerprint results required.
  • CPR and first aid training preferred (training will be provided)
  • Candidates must be available to work flexible hours, particularly late afternoons, evenings and weekends.

Skills Required

  • High school diploma
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Three years' experience in a recreation program
  • Minimum one year directly related experience working with adults with developmental disabilities or recreation/sports activity leadership
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license, acceptable driving record and reliable transportation (driving required)
  • Acceptable CORI report and suitable fingerprint results
  • CPR and first aid training (training provided)
