Summary Description of Position

This position will work in collaboration with the Rail Business Performance Manager to develop, maintain and drive rail logistics analytics for budgets, initiatives, accounting, procurement, administration, and systems as required for Vulcan’s Rail Logistics and Division Leadership to enable better decision making to drive performance, asset utilization, and increase profitability of Vulcan’s rail business. The position uses data & technology to drive divisions to develop best practices for the company as it pertains to fleet sizing, rail profitability, freight rate analysis, and rail market based information. This position will be expected to develop into a department & company subject matter expert by using company-wide analytics, metrics, technology innovation, financial reporting, and market support, with other Vulcan departments to improve company bottom line.


Education, Experience, Skills Required

Education


  • Bachelor’s Degree degree in a relevant field such as Business Administration, Project Management, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline
  • Technical and/or Data Management certifications are a plus but not required

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in data mining, analysis and continuous improvement initiatives that drive business decisions 
  • Experience communicating complex information and analysis to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in logistics or supply chain (preferably rail)
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Technical Expertise: 
    • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills to identify trends, patterns, and insights that can inform business decisions.
    • Comfortable working with large amounts of diverse data to identify trends 
    • Advanced experience with Business Intelligence and Analytics Software to visualize information and data for decision making.  Advanced knowledge of Tableau.
    • Ability to use SQL to extract information from databases.
    • Superior Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite skills, including Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets, PowerPoint/Slides. 
    • Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, cost structure analysis, rate structure negotiation, and FRA regulatory compliance.
    • Stay current on industry trends, best practices, and technologies related to business analysis and process improvement.
    • Advanced experience with Oracle Fusion is a plus. 
    • Familiarity with ArcGIS / ESRI mapping is a plus. 
    • OneStream (Financial) is a plus.

Essential Functions


  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collect and communicate strategic rail market insights from rail partners to inform and guide Sales, Business Development, Operations, Engineering, and Land/Real Estate teams.


  • Market Intelligence: Maintain a comprehensive understanding of aggregate industry trends, Vulcan’s market positioning and goals, competitive landscape, and regional dynamics to support effective railroad contract negotiations and strategic planning.
     
  • Rail Supplier Strategy: Monitor and evaluate each railroad’s strategic direction, service network changes, and market shifts to proactively anticipate and mitigate potential operational or rate impacts on Vulcan’s business.
     
  • Subject-Matter Expertise: Serve as the SME for end-to-end rail project development—ranging from new business ventures and greenfield projects to property development and rail service connections—ensuring alignment with Vulcan’s strategic priorities.
     
  • Strategic Assessment: Assist in evaluating the financial viability of rail initiatives by supporting conceptual planning, analyzing cost structures, and identifying rate advantages or operational efficiencies.
     
  • Profitability Focus: Collaborate with division leadership to meet defined profitability targets and contribute to the company’s long-term growth objectives through optimized rail logistics.
     
  • Cross-Functional/Operational Support: Share knowledge and expertise to support broader organizational initiatives, assisting internal teams across Vulcan in resolving service disruptions and systemic rail challenges and promoting consistent performance across the divisions.
     
  • Benchmarking & Innovation: Continuously benchmark practices across divisions, propose innovative rail solutions, and develop alternative strategies to enhance Vulcan’s competitive advantage.
     
  • Agile Strategy Adaptation: Proactively collaborate to adjust strategies in response to evolving market conditions, supplier capabilities, or internal business needs.
     
  • Best Practice Sharing: Identify and disseminate successful strategies and lessons learned across the Rail Logistics team and Vulcan’s divisions to promote continuous improvement.
     
  • Other Responsibilities: Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to support Vulcan’s strategic and operational goals. 

Other Requirements

  • Setting: Office environment combined with field visits to rail yards, project sites, and aggregate production facilities.
  • Travel: Minimum travel required across regional territories and partner site locations.
