Founded in 2019, Brimstone is an innovative industrial startup with a proprietary, efficient, and deeply decarbonized process for producing Ordinary Portland Cement. We’re now growing our all-star team of sharp, mission-driven, collaborative professionals as we continue to refine our process and move towards construction of our first production facilities.
Role OverviewWe are seeking a hands-on Extractive Metallurgist to join our R&D organization in a lab-intensive, experimental role. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in the lab, enjoys getting their hands dirty, and wants to work closely with junior engineers and technicians to advance extractive metallurgy processes at bench and pilot scale.
This is not a process design or desk-based role. The first 6–12 months will be heavily focused on experimental lab work.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and execute bench-scale and laboratory experiments in extractive metallurgy
Perform hands-on experimental work involving:
Hydrometallurgical processes (leaching, precipitation, solvent extraction, etc.)
Pyrometallurgical processes (thermal treatment, roasting, smelting concepts, etc.)
Work closely with junior engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance and day-to-day mentorship
Develop, document, and analyze experimental results; iterate rapidly based on findings
Support early-stage R&D programs rather than downstream process optimization
Maintain lab equipment, ensure safe lab practices, and contribute to experimental setup and teardown
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate experimental insights into development pathways
PhD in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field
Strong academic and/or professional focus in Extractive Metallurgy
Demonstrated R&D laboratory experience with significant hands-on experimental work
Deep technical background in Hydrometallurgy and/or Pyrometallurgy
Comfortable working in a highly experimental, lab-driven environment
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

What We Do
Cement is responsible for about the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as all of the cars on the road today worldwide. Cement has been widely considered one of the most difficult materials to decarbonize and has even been called out as the reason why we need point-source CCS. We have invented a way to make carbon-negative Portland cement that does not rely on point-source CCS and is identical to conventional cement and, most importantly for impact, is lower in cost. Simply put, our process will turn one of the most intractable climate problems into a carbon-negative climate solution. We have more than a dozen positions open for chemical engineers, chemists, metallurgists, 1st Policy person, 1st Business Development person, and more, please visit our website!
