The Role
Design and implement automation-first test strategies for SaaS products. Build and maintain browser and API automated tests, integrate them into CI/CD, perform exploratory testing, validate complex workflows and integrations, diagnose failures, and improve overall testability and release quality in partnership with Product and Engineering.
Summary Generated by Built In

We are seeking a technically strong Quality Assurance Engineer to help establish a modern, automation-first approach to product quality. This role will partner with Product, UX, Engineering, and DevOps throughout the development lifecycle. The QA Engineer will be responsible for understanding product behavior, identifying risks and edge cases, defining test strategies, building automated test coverage, executing targeted exploratory testing, and improving the team's ability to release high-quality software quickly. This is not a manual test-execution role. The ideal candidate is comfortable testing complex SaaS workflows, APIs, integrations, data-driven experiences, permissions, and asynchronous processes. They should be able to contribute code to the automated test suite and help shift quality earlier into product definition and software development.

Founded by U.S.-bred engineers with over 15 years of experience, Abstra specializes in sourcing skilled professionals across a wide range of technologies to meet our clients’ needs, driving innovation and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop test strategies for new features, platform enhancements, integrations, and production fixes.
  • Review product requirements, UX designs, technical designs, and acceptance criteria before development begins.
  • Identify missing requirements, ambiguous behavior, edge cases, failure conditions, permission concerns, and data scenarios.
  • Create and maintain automated tests across the user interface, APIs, integrations, and critical workflows.
  • Build and maintain end-to-end browser automation using Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or a comparable framework.
  • Build and maintain API-level automated tests.
  • Support component, integration, contract, regression, smoke, and release-validation testing.
  • Perform exploratory testing for complex workflows and high-risk changes.
  • Validate behavior across browsers, devices, roles, permissions, configurations, and data conditions.
  • Test integrations with external systems, AI services, data sources, media providers, and enterprise applications.
  • Validate asynchronous processes, background jobs, event-driven behavior, and failure recovery.
  • Reproduce, document, prioritize, and communicate defects with clear evidence and business impact.
  • Partner with engineers to improve testability, automated coverage, and defect prevention.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and help define quality gates.
  • Monitor automated test stability, investigate failures, and eliminate flaky tests.
  • Use production defects and incident patterns to improve regression coverage.
  • Contribute to test-data management, test-environment reliability, and repeatable validation processes.
  • Track and report meaningful quality indicators, including escaped defects, automation coverage, failure patterns, and release risk.
  • Use AI-assisted tools to accelerate test-case generation, automation development, defect analysis, and documentation while independently validating generated output.
  • Advocate for shared ownership of quality across the Engineering organization.

Required Technical Qualifications

  • 4+ years of professional experience in software quality engineering, test automation, or software development in test, ideally supporting modern SaaS web applications.
  • Strong hands-on experience building and maintaining browser automation with Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or a comparable framework. Experience with Playwright and TypeScript is especially valuable.
  • Ability to write stable and maintainable test automation code using TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, or a comparable language.
  • Experience automating REST API testing, with a solid understanding of HTTP, JSON, authentication, authorization, status codes, API contracts, and common integration patterns.
  • Ability to write SQL queries and validate application data in relational databases.
  • Strong knowledge of testing techniques, including boundary value analysis, equivalence partitioning, negative testing, risk-based testing, exploratory testing, and regression design, with the ability to prioritize coverage based on customer impact and technical risk.
  • Experience validating complex, data-driven workflows, including configurable behavior, multi-tenant environments, role-based access, and permissions.
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and using them to support reliable release decisions.
  • Ability to independently diagnose failures using browser developer tools, network traces, logs, API responses, database records, and application monitoring; distinguish among product, test, environment, and data issues; and provide engineers with actionable evidence.
  • Experience partnering with developers to isolate defects, investigate root causes, improve testability, and clearly document and communicate findings, supporting evidence, and business impact.
  • Experience working in Agile or iterative product-development environments, with the ability to operate effectively as requirements evolve.

Preferred Technical Experience

  • Testing React applications, AWS-hosted products, cloud-based environments, distributed services, queues, event-driven systems, or asynchronous background jobs.
  • Performance, load, accessibility, visual regression, or security testing.
  • Test data generation, service virtualization, mocking, and contract testing practices.
  • Testing media processing, video, audio, animation, creative-authoring, AI-generated, prompt-driven, or probabilistic product experiences.
  • Establishing automation-first quality practices within a team that previously relied heavily on manual testing.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation paid in USD.
  • 20 days of paid time off (PTO) per year.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and career development.
  • Company-provided equipment.
  • A collaborative, inclusive, and multicultural work environment.
  • The opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects alongside a talented and supportive team.

Pre-Employment Verification

As part of our standard onboarding process, candidates who successfully complete the interview process and accept an employment offer will be required to complete an employment verification check, and background check. This process will confirm job titles and dates of employment with two previous employers and is a standard requirement for all new employees joining the company.

Skills Required

  • 4+ years of professional experience in software quality engineering, test automation, or software development in test
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining browser automation using Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or comparable frameworks
  • Experience with Playwright and TypeScript (especially valuable)

  • Experience automating REST API testing and strong understanding of HTTP, JSON, authentication, and API contracts
  • Ability to write SQL queries and validate application data in relational databases
  • Strong knowledge of testing techniques (boundary value, equivalence partitioning, negative, risk-based, exploratory testing)
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and defining quality gates
  • Ability to diagnose failures using browser developer tools, network traces, logs, API responses, and database records
  • Experience working in Agile or iterative product-development environments
  • Experience validating complex, data-driven workflows, multi-tenant environments, role-based access, and permissions
