Public Relations and Communications Specialist

Openings: 1 full-time position | Location: New London, Connecticut (on-site)

Position Summary

The Public Relations and Communications Specialist develops draft communications plans, media materials, digital content, graphics, and outreach products for Government review and approval. The role supports the National Coast Guard Museum public-engagement mission but does not independently release information, publish official content, or speak on behalf of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Implement Government-approved communication and outreach plans for rotating exhibits, lectures, and community events.

  • Maintain media-contact information and draft press releases, media kits, interview-preparation materials, and draft responses for Government Public Affairs review.

  • Draft and design proposed content for approved websites, blogs, social channels, and digital campaigns; schedule or publish only when specifically authorized.

  • Coordinate draft materials with USCG Public Affairs personnel, incorporate review comments, and preserve approval records before release.

  • Track media mentions, web traffic, public engagement, and campaign results; prepare regular outreach-analytics reports for museum leadership.

  • Receive or route media inquiries and maintain appropriate logs without serving as an official USCG spokesperson unless specifically authorized in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a closely related discipline.

  • Three to five years of full-time professional public relations or media-relations experience.

  • Mastery of AP Style and experience creating polished written and visual communications products.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within formal approval, review, and release controls.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Communications support for cultural nonprofits, museums, military-history institutions, DoD, DHS, or comparable public-sector organizations.

  • Familiarity with Coast Guard terminology, history, and operational missions.

  • Digital-design, web-content, social-content, analytics, and earned-media reporting experience.
