SUMMARY:


The Public Administration Intern will work with city officials and staff on a variety of administrative and policy tasks. Under general supervision, the Public Administration Intern will provide administrative support, contribute to research and program development, and data analysis for various city projects.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These tasks are typical for this position and may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist with research, data collection, and analysis to support departmental projects and policy initiatives.
  • Prepare drafts of reports, memos, presentations, and other administrative documents.
  • Perform general administrative tasks such as scheduling, filing, and organizing materials.
  • Support staff with community outreach programs and city initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate program in Public Administration, Political Science, or closely related field and status as a Junior or Senior; or enrollment in an accredited graduate program in Public Administration, Political Science, or closely related field.
  • Relevant coursework, demonstrating an interest and aptitude to work in a related field of study.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • None required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and ability to use computers and related applications.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and accurately, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents, journals, and data reports. Ability to respond to inquiries or concerns from the public, regulatory agencies, or business stakeholders. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and other formal documents. Ability to present information to City staff, public officials, community members, and boards/commissions.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration, and percent and to draw and interpret various graphs.


REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is typically in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.


TRAVEL:

Travel is minimal (estimated ~5%) and consists mostly of local travel to clients and stakeholders with potential overnight travel for conferences in and out of state.


POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is a part-time position, up to 20 hours per week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Evening, weekend, and work hour adjustments may be required as job duties demand.
