RK&K is hiring a Roadway Project Manager to join our roadway design team in our growing DC office. Our team-oriented environment is supported by subject matter experts and experienced mentors that will help you succeed. The successful candidate will work closely with Leadership to manage tasks with significant opportunities for growth and increasing responsibilities. Projects will include, but not be limited to streetscapes, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, roadway widenings, and resurfacings. Clients include the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), VDOT, USDOT, and several local municipalities in Maryland and Virginia.

Essential Functions

  • Leading a team in preparation of contract plans, specifications and construction cost estimates on bicycle, pedestrian, and roadway improvement projects.
  • Working in a team environment and able to coordinate with multiple design disciplines to develop creative and innovative solutions to design challenges, and in preparing final design documents.
  • Provide oversight and quality control and assurance for work performed under each agency contract
  • Manage assigned project elements as an owner’s representative, ensuring contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction projects
  • Interpret contract requirements, provide technical guidance to staff, and ensure the quality of work products
  • Review and certify engineering documents to meet quality control goals and standards of care
  • Understand Highway Design Standards, and other highway design manuals and guidelines
  • Support proposal and business development efforts across including client meeting, tracking upcoming opportunities and developing proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates
  • Focus on client relationship development and strategic growth initiatives

Perform technical roles as needed including:

  • Apply DDOT, VDOT, MDSHA, and AASHTO design criteria, regulatory requirements, standards, and processes.
  • Designing roadway plans, profiles, typical sections, cross sections and grading.
  • Preparing and/or checking design computations and quantity calculations.
  • Leading concept road plans and alternatives efforts for new transportation systems or retrofits to existing systems.
  • Preparing and reviewing technical design reports and summarizing project elements in presentation materials.
  • Performing feasibility studies.
  • Coordinating with utility companies, agencies and assisting with public outreach efforts.

Required Education, Credentials, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer.
  • Ten+ years of experience in transportation/roadway engineering design.
  • Strong knowledge of project management planning related to Quality Control and Quality Assurance
  • MicroStation V8i, OpenRoads/Geopak/InRoads skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Passion for client service, teamwork and ability to work well with others.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • In-depth understanding of Highway Design Standards, MUTCD, DDOT, VDOT, AASHTO, and other highway design manuals and guidelines.

Preferred Skills and Experience 

  • Familiarity with NACTO guidelines.
  • Experience leading and supporting project with local DOT, public and local government agencies as well as private entities
  • Alternative project delivery experience
  • Involvement with relevant Professional Societies

Salary Range $65-$80 per hour
