W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Company is seeking an experienced, proactive Project Manager – Industrial to join our Yates Industrial Division.
The Project Manager (PM) develops, coordinates, implements, and manages all facets necessary to construct power generation projects on time, within budget, and to the client’s complete satisfaction. Serving as the primary day-to-day leader for assigned projects, the PM acts as the key liaison between project team members, superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, and the owner.
Operating under Yates Industrial’s 80% Direct Hire / 20% Subcontractor execution model, this position manages direct-hire craft resources and subcontractor packages valued at $50 million or more across Pulp & Paper, Process Chemical, Specialty Metals and Power projects.
Key Responsibilities & Principal DutiesA. Direct Hire Craft Execution- Partner with the General Superintendent to ensure superintendents and craft foremen have the required crafts, materials, tools, and heavy equipment needed to execute direct-hire scopes efficiently.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive site logistics plans in conjunction with field supervision.
- Perform constructability reviews and integrate Virtual Design & Construction (VDC/BIM) strategies into daily field execution workflows.
- Oversee daily activity reporting, tracking field progress against baseline plan, and developing recovery plans when schedule logic diverges.
- Develop clear scopes of work for all specialty subcontractors (NDT, refractory, insulation, heavy haul/rigging, electrical testing).
- Oversee subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to ensure strict compliance with project schedule milestones and scope of work commitments.
- Arrange and lead preconstruction meetings with subcontractors before starting each phase of work.
- Lead the administration of the site-specific safety program, enforcing OSHA standards, Yates Site Specific Requirements, and statutory safety duty-of-care.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, participate in workplace safety inspections, conduct pre-start safety meetings, and report near-hits and hazards immediately.
- Maintain mandatory PPE requirements, promote safety suggestions, and model "Safety Leadership" across all site activities.
- Manage project CPM schedules using Primavera P6 and MS Project, tracking progress against prescribed phase milestones.
- Implement project-specific QA/QC practices, ensuring craft work and vendor equipment comply with project specifications, ASME codes, and Yates quality standards.
- Coordinate work meetings to address labor concerns, manage the project permit process, and resolve field and design issues promptly.
- Manage project cost reporting using established financial systems, including cash flow analysis, fee analysis, general conditions, burn rates, and profit updates.
- Represent the site team in owner progress meetings, maintaining open, professional client relations.
- Understand and manage project risk under various insurance programs (SDI, Builder's Risk, OCIP, CCIP).
- Schedule and lead the project close-out process, managing punch list procedures and obtaining final owner sign-off .
- Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field preferred (equivalent direct-hire industrial experience accepted).
- Minimum 5+ years of construction management experience in heavy industrial construction.
- Required Craft Experience: Demonstrated track record managing Crafts and direct-hire packages valued at $50 Million or greater.
- Industrial Expertise: Management experience on direct-hire projects required; Pulp & Paper, Chemical, Specialty Metals and Power plants strongly preferred.
- PMP Certification is preferred.
- Software Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of Primavera P6, MS Project, Excel, Word, and VDC/BIM platforms.
- Financial & Contract Literacy: Thorough understanding of contract types, General Conditions, Burn Rates, Fee Analysis, Cash Flow modeling, Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI), and Wrap-Up insurance programs (OCIP/CCIP).
- Engineering Literacy: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specs, P&IDs, blueprints, and vendor equipment manuals.
- Strong leadership, decision-making, critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with craft labor, superintendents, subcontractors, and clients.

Work Location & Physical Demands
- Location: Assigned to project jobsites across the region, with base administrative support from the Yates Industrial Division office in Birmingham, Alabama.
- Physical Demands: Active jobsite walk-throughs, standing, climbing ladders/scaffolding, operating tools/equipment, and lifting up to 25 lbs under varied weather conditions [PM Power.pdf p.3 §Physical Demands].
- Safety Performance: Zero lost-time incidents, full trade partner OSHA compliance, and strong safety meeting participation.
- Direct-Hire Trade Productivity (80%): On-budget performance across direct-hire trade packages valued at $50M+.
- Schedule & Milestone Compliance: On-time milestone achievement (civil turnover, equipment placement, hydro-test, startup).
- Financial Health & Cost Control: Accurate cash flow reporting, fee protection, and effective burn rate management.
- Quality & Closeout: Zero unresolved QA/QC non-conformances and swift punch list completion.
