Job Description

Seeking a detail-oriented and organized person with experience and background in project management, stakeholder engagement, and key performance indicators/business performance analysis. Work will focus on supporting the execution of projects focused on advancing the clean energy ecosystem through analysis, collaboration, and partnerships. Our ideal candidate is adept at managing multiple priorities, interfacing with technical and non-technical audiences, and supporting researchers and Group Managers with different priorities simultaneously. Interest and/or experience with government contracting is a plus.

NREL conducts world-class research on energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, and energy systems integration and optimization. Nestled in the foothills of Golden, Colorado, and convenient to Denver, Boulder, and several suburbs, the NREL campus is a living experiment filled with curious researchers and advanced energy technologies. As a center within NREL, the Strategic Energy Analysis Center (SEAC) provides leading-edge, innovative, high-impact programs and research to conduct credible, objective analysis, develop tools, and build data resources that inform our transition to a secure, clean, and affordable energy future. In this role, you would be part of the Impacts Analysis group within SEAC, which hosts researchers performing state-of-the-science air quality, agrivoltaics, controlled environment agriculture, and lifecycle analysis and techno-economic analysis for candidate renewable energy technologies and fuels for the energy transition.

Initial projects may include establishing and coordinating the project support structure for multi-year research projects, managing a portfolio of subcontracts, supporting NREL staff in setting up a structure that supports more efficient subcontracting, collecting and analyzing key performance indicators, and assisting Principal Investigators (PIs) with project and portfolio management tasks as assigned. Additional projects may include establishing project planning processes and tracking financial progress with respect to deliverables and cash flow. Success is measured by the successful completion of project milestones, development of effective partnerships, streamlined execution of subcontracting, collection and analysis of key performance indicator and proactive management of a portfolio of separate projects that collectively advance our research goals.

Job duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Creating and implementing project and/or program control systems and integrating project data for decision makers, identifying project(s)/ program(s) problems and solutions.
  • Managing projects requiring the development and management of a project timeline and being accountable for the development and administration of a task and/or project budget.
  • Supporting complex projects with multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Tracking project performance to include funding and milestones for a portfolio of projects.
  • Preparing and delivering management reports.
  • Preparing and conducting workshops, webinars, and other information as required by specific projects.
  • Coordinating with multiple organizations internal and external to NREL to establish subcontracts.
  • Managing relationships with industry, academia, research, and government sponsors to advance research projects on-schedule and on-budget.

Basic QualificationsProject Manager II Requirements: Relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. Full knowledge of technical field and related disciplines. Very good interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.
Project Manager I Requirements: Relevant Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. General knowledge and frequent use of project management techniques, theories and concepts. Substantial knowledge of technical field and standards. Good interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in energy-related topics.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Experience with MS Office suite.
  • Ability to achieve a goal or outcome without knowing all the steps necessary in advance.
  • Willingness to jump in to support team members when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with DOE and/or other federal agencies.
  • Experience managing subcontracts.
  • Familiarity with national laboratory environments.
  • Experience interfacing with enterprise-wide software applications including Oracle EPM and EBS.
  • Experience with project management software, such as MS Project or similar
  • Experience with data visualization software, such as MS Power BI.
  • An interest in working at a national laboratory supporting research in the public interest.

Job Profile: Project Manager I / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
