Our Nuclear Canada business is experiencing significant growth driven in part by the planned Life Extension projects underway internationally and domestically. Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company are supporting the Advanced Nuclear Materials Research Centre (ANMRC) project located at Chalk River Laboratories. Scheduled for completion in the spring of2030, the ANMRC is a strategically important state-of-the-art research complex that will be one of the largest nuclear research facilities ever built in Canada. When construction is complete, it will serve as the backbone of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) research and development infrastructure. The 10,000-square-metre facility will feature 23 laboratories, accommodate 160 employees and consolidate key capabilities from aging facilities scheduled for decommissioning at the site.

We are seeking an experienced project manager who will report to the General Manager, Engineering Services and be responsible for all aspects of engineering and procurement/ fabrication/ construction/ commissioning support on items AtkinsRéalis has specifically been involved with designing. This role will require leadership of all project team members incl. critical secondees, and will be responsible for project executions, reporting of KPIs, management and staffing of required resources, deliverables, organizational chart, budget, schedule, subcontract and supplier strategy, risk management, project forecast and people forecasting and leveling (PFL) for the project. This role will require the day-to-day and career management of jr. project resources to the betterment of the individuals, the project and the business.

A project manager is expected to have significant experience in project delivery and project execution methodology including an understanding of engineering, procurement, construction, contract management and project controls principles. The individual will be a key member of a new mega-project and a critical part of setting the project on a path to success. On a routine basis, the PM is responsible for project reporting within the assigned scope, the effective implementation and oversight of project governance and procedures, progress toward milestones, leadership involvement in stakeholder management, realization of project goals, and accountability for project baseline and changes.

Work location is Sheridan Park, Mississauga, with occasional site travel (Chalk River) as required incl. client facilities in Cambridge, Ontario.

Your role within the team:

These responsibilities ensure that the project manager effectively leads the project from conception to completion, maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency throughout the process.

  • Project Planning and Scope Definition: Develop comprehensive project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation. Define the project scope and deliverables in compliance with contract documents and client requirements.
  • Team Leadership and Coordination: Assemble and lead a multidisciplinary project team (process, civil, mechanical, radiation physics, instrument control and electrical), ensuring effective communication and collaboration among engineers, CAD designers, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • People Management:  Maintain supervisory org. and mange career development of assigned project resources to the betterment of the individuals, the project and the business. Assemble a project team through recruiting, interviewing and/or selecting staff with appropriate skills and establishing training and development programs suitable for the work. This generally requires close coordination with functional managers from various functions (engineering, project controls, safety, quality etc.). Make effective decisions / recommendations on human resource issues, work closely with Labour Relations as required to effectively resolve work performance issues within the project.
  • Contract and Risk Management: Manage all aspects of contract administration, including scope and change control, subcontractor and supplier management, and risk management. Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and governance. Accountable for rigorous risk analysis in accordance with corporate standards and application of industry best practice including Montecarlo methodology and contingency draw-down curves.
  • Safety and Quality Assurance: Ensure adherence to safety standards and quality requirements. Develop and enforce safety programs, training, and corrective action plans to maintain high performance standards.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Apply key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor project health and performance. Establish rigorous reporting protocols to meet contract, corporate, and project-specific oversight requirements.
  • Procurement and Supply Chain Management: Responsible for all contract management including scope & change control, requirements management, subcontractor and supplier management and governance for any flow-down requirements from the parent contract to subs and vendors.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Serve as the main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders. Ensure effective communication and coordination to keep all parties informed and aligned with project goals. Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, suppliers and other project stakeholders.
  • Ethical and Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all project activities comply with corporate standards of ethical conduct, cyber-security, import-export regulations, intellectual property protections, and security clearance protocols.
  • Nuclear Safety: Accountable for all aspects of nuclear and industrial safety including adherence with corporate and customer safety programs, development and enforcement of necessary training and requirements, adherence to corrective action programs and enforcement of performance standards for all of the above.
  • Required Interfaces:
    • Customers, suppliers, Candu Partners.
    • Senior executives, department functional managers.
    • Trades personnel.

  • BSc in Engineering or equivalent is an asset.
  • PMP certification is an asset.
  • 5+ years of experience leading or supporting projects in construction, manufacturing, or engineering services.
  • Experience managing direct reports within a project delivery functional support model.
  • Experience working in a nuclear environment is an asset.
  • Understanding of nuclear supply chain and materials management principles.
  • Ability to build and inspire a team to work towards common goals.
  • Lead by example, setting high standards for Health & Safety and Nuclear Safety Culture.
  • Appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications is considered an asset.
  • Understanding of project delivery methodology, including earned value, critical path scheduling, prime contract and subcontract management, procurement and supply chain methodology, and inspection and test plans.
  • Working knowledge of industrial safety and nuclear safety culture.
  • Demonstrates initiative, decisiveness, and perseverance.
  • Plans and communicates effectively, with good instincts when to engage with stakeholders.
