Job Scope:

The Project Engineer serves as support for the planning, design, and execution of capital projects while being the primary subject matter expert (SME) for electrical and utility MEP systems during major facility construction and expansion projects (230,000+ sq ft plus additional lab buildouts). Key systems include power distribution (medium/low voltage), UPS, emergency power, lighting, and building utility systems (e.g., process water, gases, vacuum, compressed air).

This role focuses on ensuring these systems are designed, constructed, and commissioned to meet performance, reliability, and compliance standards. In addition to project execution, the Project Engineer will provide high-level technical guidance to junior facilities staff and support strategic decision-making for existing systems, but will not be responsible for daily maintenance.

As GenScript grows its U.S. footprint, having robust, scalable infrastructure is essential. This role offers a rare opportunity to design foundational systems for how we manage equipment and facilities, while also driving in-house maintenance capability, energy efficiency, and cost optimization. Your leadership will directly influence operational resilience, response time, and long-term cost control.

Details: This is a full-time role based onsite in Piscataway, NJ.

The estimated salary range is $70,000 - $85,000, based on experience.

Primary Responsibilities:

Project Execution:

  • Lead the electrical/utility scope for major capital projects from design review to commissioning.
  • Review design drawings, technical specifications, and submittals for electrical distribution, backup power, grounding, and utility systems to ensure compliance with codes, project requirements, and best practices.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and contractors to resolve design and field issues.
  • Oversee installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical and utility systems, ensuring proper performance verification and documentation.
  • Support construction scheduling, cost control, and quality management in collaboration with the Senior Construction Manager.
  • Lead and document punch list resolution for the electrical/utility scope.

Technical Oversight and Strategy

  • Conduct periodic inspections of existing electrical and utility systems to identify risks or upgrade opportunities.
  • Advise junior staff and vendors on maintenance strategies, safety protocols, and energy optimization measures.
  • Set technical standards for CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) data entry and reporting related to electrical and utility systems.
  • Contribute to integrated facility planning with the HVAC/MEP SME to ensure cohesive system performance and capacity planning.

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure designs and installations meet all applicable codes (NEC, NFPA, local/state building codes) and industry standards.
  • Support safety programs for electrical and utility systems, including lockout/tagout procedures, arc flash hazard analysis, and emergency response readiness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural/Building Engineering (electrical emphasis), or a closely related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical and utility systems engineering within industrial, life sciences, or manufacturing environments.
  • Proven track record in design review, construction coordination, and commissioning of power distribution and utility systems.
  • Strong understanding of NEC, NFPA, IEEE, and related electrical codes/standards.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specs, and as-builts.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
  • Skilled in AutoCAD and MS Office.

Preferred

  • Experience with process utilities for labs (e.g., DI/RO water, lab gases, vacuum, compressed air).
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
  • PE (Professional Engineer) license, LEED AP, or equivalent certifications.
  • Experience in life sciences cleanroom or cGMP facility projects.

We're looking for Someone Who

  • Builds systems, not just reacts to problems — you design processes that prevent recurring issues.
  • Thinks like an owner — proactive, reliable, and focused on long-term outcomes.
  • Leads with clarity and empathy — your team knows where they’re going and feels supported.
  • Communicates across levels — from technician to senior leadership, you know how to align.
