Job Description

NREL's Grid Planning and Analysis center (GPAC) is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented full-time Project Controller in the Distribution Edge group. The primary responsibility of this role is to provide specialized financial management to research staff.

The emphasis of this role is on financial planning, tracking, and reporting.  We are looking for an individual who is comfortable working with multiple technical staff to develop and implement project-specific financial reporting. The ideal candidate will be comfortable tracking financials on multiple projects (20+ projects), will communicate clearly, and thrive on problem solving in real-time. This role would support GPAC work that focuses on the global energy transformation, bridging engineering and economics, to advance sustainability, and equity for the grid of the future. 
 

The project controller will work under the general supervision and guidance of project leaders and more senior-level staff to support planning, coordinating, implementing, and assessing project activities according to project objectives and deadlines. The team will rely on you to provide detailed financial analysis and periodic reports on project status.

Key Areas of Responsibility 

Project budget review and monitoring, funding management, subcontract management (accruals, approving invoices, tracking, and meeting deliverables), task resource planning and staff scheduling, client financial reporting, and documenting cost share requirements. Specific project requirements may vary depending on client type and agreement structure.  

 

Job Duties Might Include: 

  • Supporting the project team with financial management activities: track projects based on budgets and/or in-house funding, track costs against plans. 

  • Managing and coordinating subcontracts/procurements and serving as technical monitor when needed. 

  • Completing regular assessments of project progress and finances and updating plans when indicated. 

  • Researching, assembling, and evaluating information/data and develop solutions to issues. 

  • Contributing to and preparing reports, presentations, and group communications to internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Preparing project documentation including budget tracking and reporting. 

  • Supporting the development of proposals by coordinating with PIs, developing financial draft materials, compiling, uploading materials, etc.

Basic QualificationsRelevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. General knowledge and application of technical standards, principles, theories and techniques. Frequent application of industry concepts and principles. General knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Skilled in problem solving, written and verbal communication. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency and experience using Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite and other computer software programs needed to effectively track and manage a project. 

  • Knowledge and application of project management principles and practices. 

  • Problem-solving skills related to project challenges. 

  • Strong oral and written communications skills and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to prepare professional communications that are appropriate for internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Proficiency with financial tracking systems and an ability to understand NREL financial systems (EPM, NQuIRE, ASIQ, etc.) to gather and interpret data. 

  • Organized and detail-oriented 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with project management; including experience in finance and business processes. 

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with team members and project leaders. 

  • Desire to continually develop project management skills, including learning how to use and apply new project management tools or using existing tools to meet project management needs. 

  • Skills to administer project sites, such as SharePoint and Microsoft Teams. 

  • Thrives in a fast paced, innovative environment. 

  • Initiates projects, works unsupervised, completes tasks independently, solves problems, and does whatever it takes to drive results. 

  • Excellent prioritization and ability to manage multiple assignments. 

  • Strong interest in learning about technical and institutional aspects of projects in portfolio. 

  • Experience as an analyst of data, metrics, program impact. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and collaboration skills.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Professional II / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
