This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As a Manufacturing Engineer I, you will report to the MK2 Program Operations Director and focus on developing robust manufacturing processes, systems, and tools that enable operational excellence across the MK2 team. You will design and implement scalable manufacturing pipelines, standardized processes, and analytical frameworks that support multiple product teams. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and attention towards safe and reliable spaceflight.

Key Responsibilities:

Process Development & Standardization:

  • Develop and implement standardized manufacturing processes, work instructions, and procedures that can be deployed across multiple product teams
  • Create manufacturing process pipelines from design release through production, including process validation and qualification protocols
  • Design and document manufacturing workflows, process maps, and value stream analyses for vehicle assembly and integration operations
  • Establish Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) guidelines and checklists for engineering teams to use during product development

Manufacturing Systems & Tools:

  • Build and maintain manufacturing metrics dashboards, KPI tracking systems, and reporting tools that provide visibility to program leadership and product teams
  • Develop analytical models and templates for capacity planning, throughput analysis, and production forecasting
  • Create standardized tools and templates for time studies, line balancing, and process capability analysis
  • Design documentation systems and repositories for manufacturing procedures, work instructions, and lessons learned

Production Analysis & Optimization:

  • Perform process flow analysis, bottleneck identification, and capacity planning for vehicle build operations
  • Develop cost models and should-cost analyses to support manufacturing decision-making
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Partner with Product Engineering teams to translate design intent into manufacturable processes and provide manufacturing feasibility feedback
  • Work with production teams to implement new processes, resolve manufacturing issues, and support production readiness
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain and Quality teams to establish manufacturing requirements and acceptance criteria
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities by developing manufacturing plans, identifying tooling/equipment needs, and establishing production readiness criteria

Manufacturing Readiness & Support:

  • Support vehicle build schedules by identifying manufacturing constraints and developing mitigation plans
  • Assist in manufacturing readiness reviews and production readiness assessments
  • Create and maintain manufacturing Bills of Process (BOP) and routings
  • Support test operations by developing test procedures and manufacturing support documentation

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related engineering field
  • 0-2 years of experience in manufacturing, industrial engineering, or production operations (internships and co-ops count toward experience)
  • Understanding of industrial engineering fundamentals including process design, time studies, capacity analysis, and production systems
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes (machining, welding, composites, assembly, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to analyze data and develop actionable insights
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio)
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills with ability to create clear technical documentation
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Internship or co-op experience in aerospace, automotive, or high-complexity manufacturing environments
  • Lean Manufacturing certification or Six Sigma Green Belt
  • Experience with process simulation or optimization tools (Arena, Simul8, Plant Simulation)
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools (Excel advanced functions, SQL, Python, Tableau, Power BI)
  • Experience with CAD software (CREO, SolidWorks) to review designs for manufacturability
  • Familiarity with PLM systems (Windchill) and ERP systems
  • Experience developing standard work, work instructions, or manufacturing documentation
  • Knowledge of production planning and scheduling concepts (MRP, production sequencing, constraint management)
  • Understanding of quality management systems (AS9100) and statistical process control (SPC)
  • Experience with manufacturing cost analysis and should-cost modeling
  • Familiarity with project management tools (Jira, MS Project) and collaborative platforms
  • Exposure to Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and DFMEA methodologies

 

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $75,289.00 - $105,404.25
