Summary Generated by Built In

Foreign Policy (FP) is seeking an organized and engaged early-career production designer to join our creative team. The role is responsible for production of a wide range of digital assets—including video—that adhere to FP brand guidelines and those of its partner divisions.

You’ll support our three-person team to cut and edit video clips, produce layouts in our CMS, and create associated digital materials.

The production designer will report to the executive creative director and work closely with our senior creative director for product, along with our brand designer. They will create materials for our three key partner divisions—FP Analytics, FP Podcasts, and FP Events—as well as for Foreign Policy magazine’s newsroom.

The ideal candidate is a quick, clear communicator and proactive problem-solver who excels at managing multiple projects with overlapping timelines.

This is an opportunity to learn and grow in a collaborative, creative culture.

What you’ll do

  • Video production: Creation of video clips optimized for social media audiences, following and maintaining templates, and implementing platform best practices.

  • Content production: Flowing and formatting text, images, and graphics in our CMS and converting that into associated collateral.

  • Digital asset production: Creation and iteration of materials across platforms, optimizing digital assets for use on our site, in ad positions, and in branded social media.

  • Photo and video research: Sourcing and organization of imagery to support visual communication across disciplines.

What we’re looking for

  • One year of professional experience at a media company preferred, but a recent graduate with strong internships will be considered.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite products (especially Premiere, Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat).

  • A strong portfolio showcasing a mix of creative asset production with clear use of typographical hierarchy and logic while adhering to brand guidelines.

  • Clear communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to parse and translate complicated information into understandable concepts and reader-friendly visuals. While you won’t usually write copy, an aptitude for marrying words to images is key for our expert audience.

  • Attention to detail and a track record of project management.

  • An ability to learn new technologies and thoughtfully experiment with AI tools to streamline processes.

  • The ability to work in the U.S. without a sponsor visa.

Nice to have

  • Adobe After Effects or work samples that relay visual ideas through movement.

  • Background or interest in geopolitics.

Don’t have all these skills? Neither did we when we started. We prize evidence of on-the-job learning and curiosity for skills growth over the perfect résumé. Show us your work. Share your experiences. Wow us with your cover letter. Be transparent about what you know, which part of something you did, and what you’re still learning. We’ll work to build our creative toolkit together as technologies change and the media landscape evolves.

Candidates should include a portfolio of work samples, including video clips, a key aspect of our collective toolkit that we’re eager to build out.

This is a remote-eligible position with preference for those based in Washington, D.C., New York, or Seattle.

Compensation and benefits

Salary range: $65,000-$70,000

Foreign Policy offers a comprehensive benefits program that gives eligible employees the flexibility to choose the right benefits for themselves and their families. There are three subsidized medical plans, a vision plan, and two dental plans, provided by Aetna, which can be paired with flexible spending accounts.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Working at FP

We are located in Washington, D.C., and while we have a preference for candidates in the D.C. area, we are open to remote applicants.
