Product Counsel, Payments (TripActions Liquid)
TripActions Liquid is a next-generation spend management solution that is disrupting the market by offering virtual and physical corporate cards that eliminate the need for traditional expense reports—from approval submission to reconciliation. By tying the cards to customized spend policies and employees’ itineraries, TripActions Liquid automatically recognizes and files reports at time of purchase for real-visibility and control over spend.
The TripActions Legal team is looking for a creative, collaborative, passionate attorney to embed within our TripActions Liquid product development team, providing expert legal advice and practical guidance to support the global growth of TripActions’ payment and expense related products and services. This role is ideal for a thoughtful and strategic lawyer with experience counseling dynamic, fast-growing start-ups through novel product and legal questions in the payments technology space.
What You’ll Do:
- Act as primary legal point of contact for all product-related legal issues and queries arising from the TripActions Liquid team, managing priorities and looping in in-house colleagues and outside counsel as needed
- Advise on a broad range of financial regulatory issues, including (but definitely not limited to) payments processing, money transmission, credit regulation, and card issuing, both US and Europe
- Review and negotiate commercial agreements (customer, vendor, partner) to support the team’s needs; develop templates and provide enablement training as needed
- Review and advise on product copy and external marketing/advertising matters related to TripActions Liquid product launches and marketing initiatives
- Lean in to provide subject matter expertise to the broader TripActions legal and product teams, as needed
- Contribute positively to the culture of the TripActions legal team and the company as a whole
What We’re Looking For:
- J.D. degree, or international law degree + LLM
- Member of the California bar in good standing (RIHC status OK)
- Minimum 6 years of experience as a practicing attorney is required; prior in-house product counsel experience at a technology company is a huge plus
- Significant experience with financial services, payment processing, lending, or similar regulatory frameworks is required; PSD2-specific expertise is helpful
- Familiarity with GDPR and the privacy issues arising in cross-border SaaS licensing and payment processing is also very helpful
- Ability to keep pace with TripActions’ rapid global growth and dynamic culture
- Exceptional judgment, high personal responsibility, and a practical, business-minded approach are crucial for success in this role
- Excellent communication skills are absolutely essential; you should be comfortable, confident, friendly, and be able to explain complicated issues at the right level of detail
- Strong client service orientation, with high emotional intelligence and the ability to perform well under pressure
