The Role
As a Product Owner, you'll bridge the market and engineering teams, define product specifications, conduct market/user research, and drive product execution in Upstream Oil & Gas.
Summary Generated by Built In

You must have at least 10+ years experience of Upstream Oil & Gas to be considered for this role.
You must have had a Software Product management role at at least 2 companies servicing the Upstream Oil & Gas Sector.
Description

We’re building the next generation of industrial AI for Upstream Oil & Gas, intelligent systems that reason over time series sensor, drilling, and production data to optimise exploration and production decisions. As our Product Owner, you’ll be the bridge between the market, the users, and our engineering team. Your role is to define what gets built, why it matters, and how it aligns with operator workflows.

You’ll own the product specification, market/user requirements, and competitive analysis, translating industry needs into actionable engineering deliverables. Expect to engage directly with petroleum engineers, geoscientists, drilling teams, and field operators understanding their standard work process, pain points, mapping them into system requirements, and driving clarity on how Orbital’s AI should solve them.

This isn’t a generic product role, you’ll be shaping how advanced AI is applied to subsurface, well, and production operations, defining the product playbook for one of the hardest industries to transform.
Core Responsibilities

Market & User Research

  • Engage with upstream operators, drilling contractors, and service companies to capture needs across exploration, drilling, completions, and production.
  • Analyse market trends, regulations, and digital initiatives in O&G to identify product opportunities.
  • Map competitor offerings and gaps in the digital oilfield / upstream AI space.

Define Product Requirements

  • Write Product Requirements Documents (PRDs) that translate user problems into clear specs.
  • Prioritise features based on business value, technical feasibility, and market impact.
  • Ensure requirements address both AI model development (time-series, physics-informed, LLMs) and user-facing workflows (dashboards, anomaly detection, RCA, optimisation).

Collaborate with Engineering & Research

  • Act as the voice of the customer in sprint planning and backlog refinement.
  • Translate ambiguous industry workflows (e.g. well log interpretation, drilling optimisation, production surveillance) into structured product stories.
  • Work closely with AI engineers and domain experts to validate feasibility and refine scope.

Drive Execution & Validation

  • Ensure each release ties back to user outcomes and upstream operational KPIs.
  • Pilot features with operators in live upstream environments and capture structured feedback.
  • Iterate rapidly on product scope, balancing long-term vision with near-term delivery.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner / Product Manager in Upstream Oil & Gas domain.
  • Strong understanding of upstream oil & gas workflows (seismic interpretation, drilling, completions, reservoir management, production optimisation).
  • Ability to conduct structured market research and user research and distil findings into clear product direction.
  • Experience writing detailed PRDs, user stories, and specs for technical teams.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML-driven products or industrial digital twins is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills for engaging with both field operators and engineering teams.

What Success Looks Like

  • Clear product specifications exist that reflect both market reality and user workflows.
  • Engineering has unambiguous guidance on what to build and why.
  • Customers see new releases that directly address their operational pain points.
  • Orbital’s upstream product is differentiated in the market, solving problems competitors don’t.

What We Do

Applied Computing; our vision is to deliver sustainable abundance for a growing planet, through AI that works for the Energy Industry.

These industries are an enduring necessity, they power our planet, but their complexity has kept them tethered to legacy systems. These critical industries utilise less than 10% of their data for decision making and process optimisation.

Our flagship product, Orbital, is a Multi-Foundation AI system that enables these industries to finally trust AI in the control room, harness 100% of their data and optimise in real time for any metric unlocking faster decisions, safer operations, and higher performance.

With Orbital, we aim to transform how engineers and operators understand, and optimise their plants using trustworthy, physics-grounded AI.

This isn’t the future of Industrial AI, this is the first time it’s worked.
