The Role
Lead technical direction for inverter and power-conversion platforms across kW to multi-MW systems. Define system requirements, select topologies and control strategies, resolve cross-discipline design tradeoffs, ensure manufacturability and standards compliance, mentor engineers, and represent technical vision to customers and stakeholders.
Summary Generated by Built In
Our Client is a global technical group specializing in electric power conversion, serving customers in 47 countries across OEM and Aftermarket & Service segments, with R&D, production and service sites in Europe, the Americas and Asia. For their engineering hub, we are looking for a System Engineer Power Eelectronics.

The System Engineer Power Electronics - Inverter Systems reports to the Head of New Product Implementation Engineering and carries full technical ownership of the company's new UPS product development programme. This is a predominantly hands-on engineering role (approx. 70% technical, 30% coordination) sitting at the intersection of power electronics system architecture, product definition, and cross-functional project leadership.

Working alongside with Embedded, Hardware, Control and Testing Engineers, the System Engineer defines the overall system architecture, drives technical decision-making from early concept through validation and manufacturing launch, and serves as the primary technical contact for customers and certification bodies. In the longer term, the role will expand to cover the company's broader power electronics product portfolio.

Your Tasks:

System Architecture & Product Definition
  • Define and own the overall system architecture for MW-scale UPS and inverter systems, including topology selection, power stage definition, and hardware/software partitioning.
  • Develop system-level requirements and technical specifications derived from customer, regulatory, and business inputs.
  • Lead topology and technology trade-off studies (e.g. NPC, back-to-back, AC/DC, DC/DC stages) and make architecture decisions in collaboration with the engineering team.
  • Own the product technology roadmap, starting with the UPS programme and expanding to the broader inverter product portfolio.
Cross-functional Technical Leadership:
  • Carry technical responsibility for project progress, coordinating the work of the Control System Engineer, Hardware Engineer, and Senior Embedded SW Engineer.
  • Drive alignment across engineering disciplines (HW, SW, control, mechanical) to ensure consistent system integration and architecture compliance.
  • Define and manage system-level interfaces, integration milestones, and technical review gates throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Support definition of validation and test strategy at system level, including SIL/HIL coverage planning.
Standards, Certification & Compliance:
  • Ensure the product architecture is designed for compliance with relevant power electronics standards (IEC 62040, CE marking, EN 50091, and equivalent).
  • Drive and coordinate the product certification process, liaising with certification bodies and managing documentation requirements.
  • Assess applicability of marine certification standards (GL, LR, ABS) for future product variants as the portfolio evolves.
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Lead independent technical meetings with customers — presenting system architecture, discussing requirements, and resolving technical issues.
  • Support Sales and Marketing in pre-sales technical activities, proposals, and customer demonstrations as required.
  • Represent the engineering team in supplier technical negotiations and component/subsystem selection decisions.
Risk, Safety & Quality:
  • Drive FMEA (DFMEA, PFMEA), FTA, and functional safety analysis at system level throughout the product development process.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate technical risks across the full product lifecycle — from concept through field deployment.
  • Ensure system-level design decisions are traceable to requirements and documented to the standard required for certification and IP protection.
  • Contribute to intellectual property creation (patents, technical disclosures).

Requirements
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Energy Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7–8 years of hands-on commercial experience in power electronics product development.
  • Proven track record of delivering complete power electronics products from concept through manufacturing launch - this is an absolute requirement.
  • Background in industrial power electronics applications - UPS, industrial drives, wind/solar inverters, traction converters, or equivalent high-reliability power systems.

Technical Knowledge:
  • Solid understanding of power converter topologies used in industrial and energy applications (NPC, ANPC, back-to-back, AC/DC, DC/DC, multi-level converters).
  • System-level understanding of power converter control strategies (current control, V/F, DC-link regulation, grid code compliance) - implementation ownership lies with Control System, Hardware, Testing and Embedded SW Engineers, but architectural oversight is required.
  • Familiarity with power electronics certification standards and processes (IEC 62040, CE, EN 50091, or equivalent product class).
  • Experience with system-level FMEA/DFMEA, risk management, and functional safety analysis (IEC 61508 or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of communication protocols relevant to industrial power systems (CAN, EtherCAT, Modbus, Ethernet).
  • Ability to define validation strategies including SIL, HIL, and system-level testing approaches.

Skills & Competencies:
  • Ability to lead and coordinate a small cross-functional engineering team with technical authority - not a line management role, but genuine technical ownership.
  • Strong system-level thinking with the ability to make and justify architecture decisions under uncertainty.
  • Experience conducting independent technical meetings with customers and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in technical documentation, requirements management, and engineering process tooling.
  • Self-directed working style - the role requires the ability to operate autonomously after an initial onboarding period of 1–3 months.

Language Requirements:
  • English: minimum B2/C1 - required for customer meetings, documentation, and team communication.
  • Polish: required.

Strong Advantage:
  • Direct experience with UPS systems (architecture, topologies, operating modes, grid interaction, IEC 62040 / EN 50091) - candidates with UPS background will be prioritised.

Nice to Have:
  • Background in grid-connected converter behaviour and grid code requirements (LVRT/HVRT, reactive power support).
  • MATLAB/Simulink experience for system-level modelling and simulation.
  • Familiarity with FPGA-based control platforms used in high-power converters.
  • Experience with marine or offshore certification standards (GL, LR, ABS).

Benefits
  • A greenfield technical leadership role - rare opportunity to define system architecture and technology choices from day one.
  • Work within an international environment on an innovative UPS programme with a clear path to broader portfolio ownership.
  • Stable employment in a company with an established global market position.
  • Professional development opportunities and access to state-of-the-art R&D infrastructure.
  • Attractive compensation package commensurate with experience (UoP).
  • Hybrid work model —-3 days on-site.
  • Limited travel commitment: 2-4 trips per year, maximum 2-3 weeks in total annually.

Skills Required

  • Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (Bachelor's or higher)
  • 8+ years of experience in power electronics or closely related field
  • Proven track record as a system lead or architect of complex products/systems
  • Strong troubleshooting skills at component and subsystem level
  • Familiarity with engineering quality systems (product lifecycle, engineering change management)
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills (reports, analyses, presentations)
  • Demonstrated leadership across organizational boundaries (influence without formal authority)
