The opportunity

What should banking feel like next?

As technology, customer expectations and the way people interact with digital products continue to evolve, some of our biggest opportunities won’t be solved by the patterns we already have.

They’ll require us to explore new interactions, new technologies and new ways of solving customer problems – and turn the best of those ideas into experiences that can work for millions of customers.

That’s what Lumen Frontier is here to do.

Frontier is the forward edge of Lumen, CommBank’s design system. It brings together product, design and front-end engineering to tackle some of our most ambitious customer experience problems, explore what’s newly possible, and turn breakthroughs into capabilities that can scale across CommBank.

Sometimes that means working alongside a feature team to completely rethink an important customer journey. Sometimes it means rapidly prototyping an emerging interaction or technology to understand its potential.
And sometimes it means recognising that something we’ve learned at the frontier should become part of the foundations every team can build from.

Frontier brings together two important capabilities to make that happen.

Our Experience Studio combines specialist UI design and front-end engineering to work on ambitious customer problems, rapidly explore new possibilities and push our digital experiences beyond what’s possible today.

Our Local Libraries extend Lumen for the distinct needs of the CommBank app and NetBank, allowing those experiences to evolve quickly while staying connected to a common foundation.

We’re looking for a Product Lead to lead Frontier and shape where we go next. You’ll decide where Frontier can make the biggest difference: identifying consequential customer problems, spotting emerging opportunities and making thoughtful bets about where we should explore.

Then you’ll bring product, design and engineering together to turn those opportunities into something real.

What you’ll do

You’ll set the ambition and focus for Frontier – balancing the customer problems we can solve now with the possibilities we should be exploring for the future.

You’ll:

  • Find the problems worth solving. Work across our digital experiences to identify important customer problems and opportunities where Frontier’s multidisciplinary capability can create a step-change in the experience.
  • Explore what’s next. Stay close to emerging technologies, interaction models and changing customer expectations, identifying where they could unlock genuinely better experiences for CommBank customers.
  • Turn ideas into experiences. Create an environment where designers and engineers can move quickly from an opportunity to a prototype, put it in front of customers and learn what works.
  • Partner on our hardest experience challenges. Bring Frontier alongside feature teams where specialist UI and front-end capability can help unlock a problem, challenge existing assumptions or raise the ambition of an experience.
  • Turn breakthroughs into building blocks. Identify what we can learn from successful experiments and experiences, and work with Lumen and our Local Libraries to turn those insights into reusable patterns and capabilities.
  • Shape our Local Libraries. Define how our CommBank app and NetBank libraries evolve to meet the needs of each platform while remaining connected to Lumen.
  • Create leverage. Look beyond the experience immediately in front of you and ask how an idea, pattern or capability could improve experiences across CommBank.
  • Measure what matters. Establish meaningful measures of customer impact, experience quality, adoption and leverage, using evidence to decide where Frontier invests next.
  • Build belief and momentum. Bring product, design, engineering and senior leaders around a clear view of the opportunities ahead and what Frontier can unlock.

What success looks like

Frontier should become one of the places CommBank turns when we need to answer a difficult question:

How could this experience be fundamentally better?

Success means we’re not simply improving the consistency of what exists today. We’re expanding what teams believe is possible – and then making those possibilities repeatable.

You’ll know we’re succeeding when:

  • We’re solving meaningful customer problems and can point to experiences that are materially better because Frontier got involved.
  • We’re identifying important new technologies and interaction models early, understanding their potential through real experimentation rather than speculation.
  • Teams seek out Frontier when they have an ambitious, complex or emerging experience problem to solve.
  • Experiments move quickly from idea to prototype to customer learning – and the strongest ideas have a clear path into production.
  • The CommBank app and NetBank have powerful Local Libraries that enable each experience to evolve while remaining connected to Lumen.
  • Great ideas don’t stay isolated. Patterns and capabilities proven through Frontier find their way into Lumen, Local Libraries and other experiences.
  • Frontier continually raises the bar for what great digital craft looks and feels like at CommBank.
  • We can demonstrate not only the experiences Frontier has helped create, but the broader impact those ideas have had across our digital ecosystem.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who is energised by important problems where the answer isn’t obvious.

You’ll bring:

  • A strong track record leading digital products from early discovery and experimentation through delivery, adoption and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent product judgement – the ability to distinguish an interesting idea from an important opportunity and focus teams on the problems that matter.
  • The ability to create an ambitious product vision and translate it into a focused strategy, roadmap and sequence of bets.
  • Strong customer instincts and a deep curiosity about how technology can enable simpler, more intuitive and more useful experiences.
  • Experience working across sophisticated digital products, platforms or ecosystems, ideally at significant scale.
  • An appreciation for exceptional design craft and an understanding of how design systems, UI design and front-end engineering work together.
  • Strong discovery and experimentation skills, using customer insight, data and prototypes to learn quickly and make decisions.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity. You won’t always begin with a defined solution, roadmap or even a completely understood problem.
  • The ability to move between exploration and execution – from asking “what if?” to working through what it takes to put something into customers’ hands.
  • The ability to build strong relationships and bring designers, engineers, product teams and senior stakeholders around a shared ambition.

You might have come to product leadership through Product, Design or Engineering. Experience with design systems, platforms, developer or designer tooling, emerging technology or experimental product teams would all be valuable.

But more important than any particular background is your ability to spot an important problem, imagine a materially better experience and lead a multidisciplinary team from possibility to reality.

We look forward to hearing from you!
