The Role
Own backend-heavy full-stack product surfaces from architecture through production operation. Responsibilities include building AI-powered answer experiences, identity and billing systems, APIs, integrations, and workflow features; managing observability, performance, incident response, and iteration based on user feedback. The role requires strong ownership, high agency, trade-off reasoning, AI tooling familiarity, and experience operating robust systems in production.

About us

Nylon is the AI research platform for tax and law professionals.

The tool practitioners reach for when the answer has to be right. We're used by 2,000+ firms across NZ, AU and the UK, backed by Blackbird, and expanding fast beyond research into the wider workflow professionals live in: client meetings, documents, the tools firms already use.

The role

Product engineers at Nylon own a product stream end to end. Not a ticket queue or a component: a customer problem, and the outcome for the firms that have it.

You'll talk to accountants and lawyers, work out what actually makes a difference to their day, decide what's worth building, build it, ship it, then go back to the customer who asked for it and find out whether it worked.

What that looks like
  • You talk to customers every week: calls, onboarding sessions, support threads. You'll have customers you know by name and can ring to test an idea.

  • You decide what to build. You weigh customer pain, usage data and commercial impact, and make the call with product instead of waiting for a spec.

  • You ship early. Get a rough version in front of real users, then iterate on what they actually do, not what they said they'd do.

  • You own the result: adoption, retention and revenue for your stream, not just whether it shipped. That includes production health, observability and the occasional incident.

  • You work full stack, including the UX. You design the first version yourself with our design system and bring in design when it's worth polishing.

How we work
  • AI-native. Agentic dev tooling (Claude Code) is the development loop.

  • Async-first. Effective writing is a key skill.

  • No prescribed solutions. We agree the problem and the constraints; how you solve it is yours.

About you

We care about evidence of ownership, not years of experience.

We hire product engineers at every level. We set the level through the interview, not the title on your CV.

  • You've taken something from a customer conversation to production and can tell us what changed for them

  • You'd rather talk to a user than guess, and you're comfortable on a call with a partner at an accounting or law firm

  • High agency: you own outcomes, not tasks

  • You reason in trade-offs, technical and commercial, out loud and in writing

  • You already use AI tooling to ship faster, and you're curious about where that goes next

  • Show us something you built because you wanted it to exist (a repo, an app, a product or a business all count)

  • You have the right to work in Australia (we can’t offer visa sponsorship for this role)

  • Bonus: you've worked in or alongside accounting, tax, law or another professional-services world

Stack

What we run today. Experience with it helps; it isn't a filter.

  • Node.js, React, PostgreSQL

  • AWS, Terraform, Docker

  • Jest, GitHub Actions, Datadog

Skills Required

  • 5+ years of commercial software development experience
  • Experience taking a system from design through production and operating it
  • High agency and demonstrated ownership of outcomes
  • Ability to decompose complex problems and reason about trade-offs verbally and in writing
  • Experience using AI tooling to improve software development
  • Ability to build robust systems with production reliability in mind
  • Evidence of independently building a project, application, product, repository, or business
  • Right to work in Australia
