Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Product Development Engineer supports the design, formulation, and commercialization of advanced materials used in electronic components and their assemblies, such as adhesives, tapes, conductive materials, thermal materials, and assembly materials. The role focuses on developing innovative solutions that meet customer performance requirements and align with business growth objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop new materials or enhance existing products for electronic applications such as bonding, shielding, grounding, semiconductors, displays, interconnects, or thermal management.
  • Design and execute laboratory experiments, analyze data, and document results.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, quality, marketing, and application engineering.
  • Support scale-up, pilot production runs, and technology transfer to manufacturing.
  • Partner with customers, applications engineering and commercial teams to understand application needs and translate them into product specifications.
  • Support testing and qualification projects of existing products.
  • Evaluate competitive products and emerging technologies to guide development direction.
  • Ensure product designs comply with relevant safety, regulatory, and reliability requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation supporting project decisions and product launches.
  • Contribute with customer insights, new product ideas and intellectual property.
  • Conform with company policies, including Code of Conduct and Compliance.

  • Working with global and local Applications Engineering, Product Development, Commercial and Marketing teams to develop advanced materials that enable next-generation electronic devices.
  • Accelerating business growth by advancing products from concept to commercialization efficiently.
  • Enhancing manufacturing readiness and product quality through robust scale‑up and validation.
  • Represent 3M portfolio for Electronics to our customers. through presentations, training, conferences and other technical interactions.
  • Providing launch support for new product programs by generating supporting documentation, demonstration tools, videos, and training materials.
  • Building a deep understanding of customer needs and competition for the electronics market and provide “Voice of Customer,” new product ideas and competitive analysis.
  • Develop lab infrastructure to support business plans, plan for equipment, inputs for lab capex planning, work with engineering for procurement of equipment by providing right specifications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree or higher from any reputed Institution/ University with polymer science, chemistry, materials science, or a related field as the major subject.
  • Experience with polymer systems, adhesives, coatings, films, or electronic materials is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of work experience in R&D and product development. Preferably, in a related role developing materials for electronics assembly.
  • Required experience handling various types of samples for performing tests such as tensile, mechanical shock, vibration, thermos-mechanical, electrical insulation, contact resistance tests, etc.
  • Required experience in testing mechanical, chemical and electrical properties of materials. Proficiency in conducting product evaluations, performance testing, failure-mode analysis, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in designing experiments, testing methods, and standard operating procedures.
  • Comfortable in handling testing equipment, and analytical instruments.
  • Good understanding about IP protocols and procedures.
  • Should be a team player, able to plan and work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving, experimental design, and data-analysis skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional, project-based environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • This role may require about 10% of domestic travel.
