Application Notes
We're building a tech platform to modernize representative democracy—turning social support into real political leverage. Instead of top-down campaigns, we're creating a viral, decentralized system where leadership flows through networks of trust.
We have an existing product (sway.co—check it out!) that does what no other product on the market can do: allow socially influential leaders to prove their electoral leverage to specific elected representatives and compel politicians to act. Now we're moving into the 2026 midterms with a strong need for delightful, polished, consumer-grade design.
The design challenge: we’re translating something people find confusing and alienating (politics, voting, civic engagement) into something that feels intuitive (even fun!) to use.
Help us scale design at Sway. You’ll partner with our team to build our design function. You’ll design the look, feel, and experience of our product, meaning you’ll:
- Own core product experiences. Design the flows people use every day — joining voting groups, onboarding, ballot recommendations, leader/member interfaces. Make them as polished and effortless as the consumer apps people love.
- Execute quickly. Work directly with engineers in tight cycles. Design is never the bottleneck.
- Build and scale our design systems. Build component libraries, interaction patterns, and visual language that let us maintain quality as we grow.
- Turn insight into action. Talk to users, observe behavior, identify friction points. Turn insights into shipped improvements.
- Invent what’s next: Ideate new features, experiences, and processes that expand what’s possible for our users and our team.
- Make politics feel good. Most civic tech feels like homework. We want Sway to feel like the consumer apps people actually enjoy.
- You have strong consumer instincts and have shipped products that real people loved
- You're fast and scrappy—comfortable deciding without perfect information
- You care about the consumer experience and are comfortable designing for a wide audience
- You're technically savvy enough to collaborate effectively with engineers
- You care deeply about improv
Bonus: Experience with growth-oriented consumer products, a portfolio showing range, or you've built something yourself.
Competitive comp, flexible PTO, full benefits, and ground-floor equity in a company trying to reinvent political power.
Location: San Francisco, in-person 5 days a week.
