OVERVIEW:
The D. E. Shaw group seeks a product designer to join the Human Capital team focused on delivering high-quality, organized design execution across multiple platforms. The team partners with product managers to craft thoughtful, polished, and rigorous user experiences, leveraging a tailored design system and emerging AI-powered workflows. This role offers the opportunity to own detailed design implementation work while developing skills in early-stage strategy, design resource management, and a range of AI tools.

WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Drive the execution of user experience design across custom web platforms, ensuring consistency and quality at every stage.
  • Build, maintain, and evolve design systems in Figma, utilizing features such as components, slots, variables and semantic tokenization, and Code Connect.
  • Actively research, evaluate, and implement AI-enabled workflows to improve all aspects of the software development process—from ideation to handoff.
  • Create AI-consumable resources that drive high-quality design execution such as Figma Make Kits, skills, and guideline docs.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing priorities and timelines to deliver polished outcomes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate requirements into clear, actionable design solutions.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field, plus four to seven years of experience in UI/UX design and a track record of delivering high-quality work across platforms.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Figma, including hands-on experience with auto layout, components, slots, variables and semantic tokenization, and design system management.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for and experience with AI-powered design workflows, such as Claude and Figma Make.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, from system-level architecture to pixel-level refinement.
  • Ability to manage several projects at once and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience engaging stakeholders ranging from individual contributors to leadership.
  • Proven ability to design complex systems involving multiple user types and workflows, and to clearly articulate design rationale.
  • The expected annual base salary for this position is $130,000 to $170,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.

What We Do

The D. E. Shaw group is trusted by investors across the world to manage their assets by seeking the optimal balance of risk and reward. While we’re known as a pioneer in quantitative investing, we also have considerable expertise in areas that involve fundamental analysis or portfolio manager discretion. We use a combination of quantitative and qualitative tools to uncover independent, hard-to-find sources of return across global public and private markets. Founded in 1988 over a small bookstore in downtown New York City, the D. E. Shaw group began with six employees and $28 million in capital and quickly became a pioneer in computational finance. In the early days of exposed pipes and extension cords, tripping on a cable could take out our whole trading system. Today, the firm has more than 2,500 people around the globe and an institutional-grade (and trip-proof) infrastructure, but we still value creativity, entrepreneurship, and the spirit of discovery. If you’re an intellectually adventurous person who loves to collaborate on challenging and rewarding projects, we encourage you to apply.
