Product Design Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO: Director of Product Management and Design

DIRECT REPORTS: None

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

ROLE:

The New Product Design Engineer is responsible for designing and supporting the develop of new products for Genpak in accordance with internal and external customer needs, coordination, and procurement of necessary tooling and for supporting the transition of these products into full scale production. Responsibilities are to be completed with consideration of safety, cost and budget requirements, efficiency, timeliness, and production of a quality product within specifications and minimal defects. This is a highly collaborative position requiring strong organizational, follow-up, project management and communication skills. The ability to cultivate relationships with corporate departments, manufacturing teams in multiple facilities, vendors and customers is essential in the achievement of objectives.

Requirements

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Lead in the design of new products including conceptual drawings.
  • Design new product concepts
  • Design new products
  • Modify existing product designs to solve customer (internal or external) pain points.
  • Support the Development of new products.
  • Develop in the establishment of project timelines and identify critical dates and deliverables.
  • Support the development of Fitness for Use (FFU) Product Requirements
  • Support in the development and execution of Fitness for Use (FFU) testing procedures that provide data-driven results to stakeholders.
  • Support the creation of quality specifications and quality test methods for new products.
  • Support qualification of new production tooling, as necessary.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop production methods and procedures.
  • Must be available to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Demonstrates ability to work without supervision.
  • Other duties, as necessary.

Design/Product Design:

  • Demonstrates mechanical aptitude skills.
  • Exhibits strong 3D CAD and rendering aptitude.
  • Demonstrates understanding of Genpak's manufacturing process.
  • Ability to convert concepts into designs.
  • Ability to design with safety in mind.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to product design for relevant plastic parts and packaging.
  • Has a knowledge of plastic thermoforming material properties.
  • Ability to identify design improvements.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

Interpersonal/Communication:

  • Ability to participate and/or foster interdepartmental communication and teamwork.
  • Ability to prioritize multi-task duties.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to disseminate information in a timely and diplomatic manner.
  • Ability to work under pressure and utilize critical thinking skills to meet scheduled deadlines and respond to emergency situations without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Communicate regularly and pro-actively with all levels of employees regarding problems or issues impacting equipment or processes.
  • Ability to establish and build relationships with internal/external customers.
  • Ability to motivate, train, and delegate responsibility to direct report.
  • Demonstrated ability to work without supervision.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings or diagrams including equipment, tooling and other blueprints, schematics, and mechanical renditions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of mechanical and electrical principles and applications.
  • Stay up to date on evolving equipment and methods, implementing as necessary.
  • Computer skills and experience with Solid Works, AutoCAD, Studio 5000 and/or similar software
  • Ability to correctly utilize gauging equipment.

Efficiency:

  • Demonstrate ability to initiate and perform root cause analysis and implement corrective action to drive improvement.
  • Ability to meet or exceed performance standards and continuously improve upon them.

Safety:

  • Demonstrated ability to comply with all Company policies and procedures and to uphold, support and exemplify the safety programs and standards.
  • Follow all plant requirements when visiting other locations.
  • Participate in Job Safety Analysis (JSAs) as needed.
  • Exemplify and promote safe working practices as an essential job requirement.
  • Ensure housekeeping in the immediate and surrounding work area is maintained or improved to the highest level possible.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify industry specific regulations and adhere to industry standards.
  • Demonstrates ability to comply with major Federal and State industrial safety regulations and industry and professional standards.
  • Demonstrate ability to understand and actively participate in all company safety programs, policies, and procedures.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Engineering with 5 years of related Industrial/Consumer Products/Thermoforming Design experience,

OR

  • AS in Engineering or other Operations Technology field with 8 years of related Industrial/Consumer Products/Thermoforming Design experience,

OR

  • Minimum of 10 years of related Industrial/Consumer Products/Thermoforming Design experience.
  • Knowledge of physical properties and behaviors of polymers and experience with plastics processing machinery
  • Experience in Design for Thermoforming applications
  • Previous project management experience desired.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing opportunities and making recommendations that are innovative and creative.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Advanced 3D CAD skills with graphic rendering experience preferred.

Must be able to:

  • Work an 8-hour shift with overtime as required.
  • Sit constantly, stand and/or walk frequently.
  • Speak and hear constantly.
  • Use of fingers, hands, and arms constantly
