Primary Responsibilities:
- Identify and decrease process safety risk by applying risk-based analytical methodology to all areas of the process units
- Communicate and train plant personnel on the process safety management standards
- Facilitate and/or participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Management of Change (MOC), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), and Layers of Protection Analyses (LOPA), and provide recommendations to address deficiencies
- Collect and analyze process safety metric trends for improvement opportunities
- Assess work conditions and identify potential risks that could lead to unplanned or uncontrolled releases
- Collaborate with the appropriate departments and management to ensure process safety fundamentals and best practices are integrated, understood and implemented in appropriate areas such as operating procedures, engineering practices, and asset integrity.
- Facilitate and/or participate on incident investigation teams to identify effective corrective and preventive actions. Understand the PSM implications of incidents and provide guidance to the plant for proper classification, investigation, and improvements
- Help ensure the application of recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP) for process unit designs and operations
- Provide technical support for proposed projects to ensure compliance with the process safety program
- Oversee corrective action implementation from audits, self-assessments, RCIs, PHAs, and LOPAs
- Perform and document process safety management self-assessments and develop action plans for identified gaps
- Provide training to plant personnel regarding the process safety program, hazard recognition, and PSM procedures and requirements.
- Represent the St. James plant as a member of the AmSty Process Safety Network by sharing significant learnings and participating in the development of corporate-level process safety initiatives
- Other duties as necessary supporting the needs of the Department
Job Requirements:
- Engineering degree (preferably chemical or mechanical)
- Preferred 5-7 years experience in a process safety role or equivalent engineering experience in a PSM-covered facility
- Gain knowledge of the styrene manufacturing process units
- Gain knowledge of the operating procedures
- Working knowledge of OSHA PSM 14 elements. St. James is a VPP site.
- Experience with industry codes and standards including, but not limited to CCPS’s Risk-Based Process Safety framework, API RP 754, OSHA 1910.119 PSM regulation
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively develop and maintain relationships with all levels of the organization
- Ability to collaborate and generate solutions that effectively decrease risk and ensure safety
- Preferably trained in:
- -Process Hazard Analysis facilitation
- -Layers of Protection Analysis facilitation
- -Safety Instrumented Systems (i.e. IEC 61511)
- -Effluent modeling (e.g., ALOHA, PHAST)
- -Quantitative risk analysis
- -Facility siting
- - Root cause analysis
- Ability to travel on periodic basis (i.e., 3-4 trips per year)
- Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) Card
