Process Engineer & Digital Application Engineer
Summary
This is a field-based role with significant travel to customer sites across the Americas. Combination of on-site, office, and remote work depending on project phase. As a Process Engineer & Digital Application Engineer, you will serve as a technical field expert, supporting customers throughout the lifecycle of SMS Electric & Automation and Digital products, from post-project commissioning through long-term optimization and upgrades.
You will work at the intersection of process models, automation systems, digital applications, and AI/ML-driven analytics, contributing directly to improved performance, availability, and sustainability of customer operations.

What you’ll do
Process Engineering & Field Services
- Support post-project commissioning activities for Electric & Automation and Digital systems.
- Perform process model tuning, validation, and optimization for Hot Strip Mill operations.
- Execute on-site troubleshooting of process, automation, and digital application issues.
- Support Hot Strip Mill Health Checks and performance audits.
Digital Applications & Software Support
- Deploy, configure, and support digital products including:
- HSM Expert Application
- Genius Condition Monitoring
- Camera-based Hot Strip Mill applications
- Assist with data integration, signal validation, and analytics pipelines.
- Support AI/ML-enabled features such as anomaly detection, predictive monitoring, and performance optimization.
- Collaborate with software development teams to test, validate, and improve applications.
Lifecycle Services, Modernization & Upgrades
- Support digital, electrical, and automation modernization projects.
- Assist in implementing upgrades, retrofits, and new digital functionalities at customer sites.
- Ensure smooth transition from commissioning to long-term service and support contracts.
Technical Sales & Customer Interaction
- Provide technical support during sales, proposals, and customer workshops.
- Translate operational challenges into process and digital solution recommendations.
- Support customer training and knowledge transfer for digital and automation systems.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with:
- Process Technology teams
- Digital & Software Engineering
- Electric & Automation service teams
- Support continuous improvement of service tools, documentation, and best practices.
- Contribute feedback from the field to product development and R&D teams
What you’ll need
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in:
- Process Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Automation Engineering
- Computer Science
- Data Science or a related technical discipline
- 2–5+ years of experience in:
- Industrial process engineering, automation, or digital applications
- Steel or metals industry experience is a strong advantage
- Experience with:
- Industrial automation systems
- Process models
- Data analytics or software applications is highly desirable

Skills Required
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Process, Electrical, Automation Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or related technical discipline
- 2-5+ years of experience in industrial process engineering, automation, or digital applications
- Experience with industrial automation systems
- Experience with process models (tuning, validation, optimization)
- Ability to perform on-site troubleshooting, commissioning, and performance audits at customer sites
- Significant travel availability for field work across the Americas
- Experience with data analytics, data integration, signal validation, or software applications
- Experience with AI/ML-enabled features such as anomaly detection and predictive monitoring
- Steel or metals industry experience
- Successful completion of drug screen and physical capacity profile test
