This role is required to work on-site 5 days a week out of our Holland, MI location.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Privacy Counsel I is responsible for identifying and analyzing legal issues and providing practical advice in the areas of global consumer privacy and security, consumer product safety and advertising, and supporting more advanced legal projects as assigned. Privacy Counsel I will utilize a thorough understanding of the Company's business to provide practical legal solutions in furtherance of corporate goals and products portfolio.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Provide strategic advice and mitigate risk in the fast-evolving areas of global consumer data privacy, data security and consumer product safety and advertising. This includes working closely, collaborating, and coordinating with key stakeholders to advise on applicable privacy and data protection laws, regulations and guidelines affecting the Company's business.
  • Advise on best practices with privacy and data protection laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, Washington Privacy Act, and other state-specific privacy regulations), including overseeing the legal aspects of data collection and use, privacy disclosures and transparency.
  • Review product advertisements, labeling, safety guidelines, and manuals and provide recommendations in accordance with the FTC Act and consumer protection laws.
  • Review and update corporate privacy documentation, including policies, procedures, notices, consents, and terms.
  • Draft and negotiate privacy and data security terms in contracts with business partners and vendors, including data processing and data transfer agreements.
  • Proactively anticipate and guard against legal risks facing the Company, including monitoring developments and changes in laws and regulations impacting the organization's products.
  • Supporting privacy and data-security related training and communications and the implementation of critical processes.
  • Assist the Company in matter management, including responding to class actions and other legal proceedings as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

HOW YOU'LL DO IT

  • Attention to detail - Ensuring information is complete and accurate; following up with others to ensure that agreements and commitments have been fulfilled.
  • Personal accountability - keeps promises and honors commitments, accepts responsibility for one's actions and assumes responsibility when dealing with problems, crises, and issues.
  • Maintain a high level of honesty, integrity, and confidentiality with respect to Company matters.
  • Comply with all Company policies and procedures, safety regulations, company safety policies and safely perform all duties, including but not limited to, promoting a safe workplace.

WHAT TO BRING

  • J.D. from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school and good standing member of the State Bar (Michigan preferred).
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience practicing law with some experience in at least one of the following areas: consumer data privacy and security, consumer product safety, product liability, consumer product labeling and advertising, and/or consumer rights generally.
  • Excellent communication, writing and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency in legal research.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

WHAT WOULD HELP

  • 2+ years' work experience practicing law in at least two of the following areas: consumer data privacy and security, consumer product safety, product liability, consumer product labeling and advertising, and/or consumer rights generally.
  • Experience working in-house.
  • Experience working at a domestic or international corporation that sells medical devices or other consumer electronic products would be beneficial to this role.
