The Role

At Walmart Advanced Systems & Robotics, we're building the infrastructure that will power the next generation of retail experiences. We're the team behind Alphabot®, a new technology that's changing the way America shops. Our automated pickup and delivery systems use a combination of robotics and software to efficiently handle large volumes of online orders, streamlining operations for managers and enhancing the customer experience. We're seeking a Software Services Architect to join us to drive the architectural vision of services that will span both cloud and on-premise for our multi-robot grocery fulfillment system as well as be a key, hands-on developer leading technical decisions for the team.

In this role, you'll be involved in security, coding best practices, algorithm design, code reviews, scalability and performance discussions, deployment strategies, cross-team architecture, communication protocols, message flows, and contracts. 

The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience in building event-based systems.
  • Is proficient in building and deploying services in Azure or a similar platform.
  • Excellent knowledge of scalable and resilient middleware services, both on premise and cloud. 
  • Has a track record of architecting and building services in a complex and mission-critical software infrastructure.
  • Experience in decomposing monolithic applications into scalable micro-services.
  • Knowledge of deployment tools, both on-premise and cloud.
  • Enjoys asking questions to get to the root of a problem to gain a deeper understanding of the needs/problems of the end-user.
  • Enjoys learning new technologies and evangelizing them when they will make a significant impact to the delivery, scalability, and reliability of our software.

What you'll work on:

  • Architect and implement a set of services for order fulfillment. 
  • Collaborate with different teams to define message workflows.
  • Breakdown requirements into deliverables
  • Create best practices, be involved in code reviews, and mentor software engineers to produce high-quality code. 
  • Design and implement code that spans deployment, production, and observability. 
  • Interface with Walmart's Warehouse Management System and other fulfillment technologies

Ideally, you should have:

  • 10+ years of software product development experience
  • Deep expertise in high-performance micro-service architectures
  • Hands-on experience with Kafka; Kubernetes; Java or C# in production environments
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to inspire technical teams
  • BS or higher in Computer Science or related field (advanced degree preferred)

Some experience preferred in:

  • Robotics and autonomous systems
  • Order and Inventory Systems, Warehouse Control Systems

Walmart Advanced Systems & Robotics, previously known as Alert Innovation, is now an essential component of the Walmart organization. Founded in 2013, the company focused on revolutionizing the retail industry through cutting-edge automation and robotic technologies.

In 2016, Walmart began collaborating with Alert Innovation on a customized solution for their market fulfillment centers. This partnership led to the successful pilot of the first Alphabot System in 2019 paving the way for Walmart’s acquisition of Alert Innovation in November 2022. Since the acquisition, Walmart has successfully launched several new market fulfillment centers and continues to rapidly scale this new technology at stores nationwide.
