As a Principal Software Engineer on the W+ team, you will work on high-impact initiatives that shape the future of customer loyalty at Walmart. You will help define technical strategy, guide architecture across teams, and deliver resilient, customer-centric solutions that serve millions of customers and associates.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as a hands-on technical authority and trusted advisor for Walmart+ engineering teams, influencing architecture and implementation across multiple products and services.
  • Lead the discovery, technical strategy, and solution design for complex initiatives spanning membership, customer engagement, benefits, personalization, and omnichannel experiences.
  • Define and evolve scalable, resilient, and secure architectures for distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven platforms.
  • Translate business objectives and customer needs into pragmatic technical strategies, roadmaps, milestones, and measurable engineering outcomes.
  • Drive architecture decisions that balance customer value, quality, cost, delivery timelines, maintainability, and long-term platform evolution.
  • Design and review systems using Java, Spring Boot, Node.js, Kafka, NoSQL databases, cloud-native technologies, and related platform capabilities.
  • Lead design reviews, technical deep dives, code reviews, and architecture discussions, ensuring solutions meet Walmart engineering, security, privacy, accessibility, and operational standards.
  • Establish and promote coding standards, design patterns, testing strategies, observability practices, and secure software development principles.
  • Stay hands-on by contributing to critical code, prototypes, proof-of-concepts, technical spikes, and production problem resolution.
  • Ensure services are built for reliability through effective telemetry, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, performance engineering, disaster recovery, and operational readiness.
  • Drive engineering excellence through automation, CI/CD, DevOps practices, continuous delivery, and improvements to developer productivity.
  • Partner closely with Product Management, UX/UI, Quality Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, Security, Data, and Architecture teams.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, architects, product leaders, business stakeholders, and senior leadership.
  • Create clear technical documentation, architecture decision records, diagrams, presentations, and implementation guidance.
  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leads, foster a culture of learning and innovation, and help grow the organization’s technical capabilities.
  • Influence technical standards and reusable patterns across Walmart+ and the broader Walmart Global Tech community.
  • Conduct research and evaluate emerging technologies, including agentic AI use cases, to identify opportunities that improve customer experiences, engineering effectiveness, and platform scalability.
  • Participate in hiring, technical assessments, hackathons, demo days, architecture forums, and other activities that strengthen the engineering community.
  • Provide technical leadership during production incidents, debugging complex distributed-system issues and driving durable corrective actions.

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on building and operating large-scale distributed systems.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, Lead Engineer, Architect, or equivalent technical leadership role.
  • Extensive hands-on experience designing, developing, and delivering software products and platforms with a large user base.
  • Advanced knowledge of software design, distributed systems, microservices architecture, event-driven architecture, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, and performance engineering.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot; experience with Node.js and JavaScript/TypeScript is highly desirable.
  • Deep experience with Kafka or comparable event-streaming technologies, including topic design, partitioning, consumer groups, delivery semantics, replay, schema evolution, and operational troubleshooting.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases and an understanding of data modeling, consistency, availability, partitioning, replication, and scalability trade-offs.
  • Experience building cloud-native services on public cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps and CI/CD practices, Git, Maven or comparable build tools, automated testing, release management, and infrastructure automation.
  • Experience with containerized platforms and technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.
  • Excellent debugging, performance analysis, production support, and incident-management skills.
  • Experience with observability and operational tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, distributed tracing, structured logging, and service-level indicators.
  • Proven ability to influence without direct authority and align multiple teams around a technical direction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong decision-making skills and the ability to balance competing priorities in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working with global, geographically distributed teams and products.
  • Exposure to agentic AI, generative AI, or intelligent automation use cases in software engineering or customer-facing products is desirable.
  • Risk analysis and trade-off methodologies, including cost analysis, business objectives, requirement classification, domain knowledge, user stories, and functional/non-functional requirements.
  • Coding standards, secure coding practices, software design principles, and development guidelines.
  • Programming languages and frameworks such as Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Spring Boot, and Node.js.
  • Platforms and infrastructure such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, and Helm.
  • Quality, safety, privacy, and security standards, including PCI and other applicable compliance requirements.
  • Telemetry, observability, service health, capacity management, and operational readiness.
