Engineering Services designs, builds, and sustains technology that powers DE&E Technology's worldwide content production and distribution platforms. In doing so, they contribute to a series of cross-functional services and technologies, including Quality Assurance, Data Analytics, Software Development, Broadcast Infrastructure, and Networking & Security.
Job Summary:
Our Performance and Reliability teams are leading the improvements, optimization, and availability of applications across the Disney organization and business units, taking a consultative approach to Reliability Engineering by supporting, educating, mentoring, and delivering automation to foster performance and resiliency in best practice.
As a Principal Reliability Engineer, you serve as our domain expert, solving unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on business. This role is multidisciplinary in nature, often involved in major work efforts of strategic importance while working directly with senior levels across different organizations and business units. You will help promote and develop existing and new reliability standards and best practices, providing input in the design of systems and contributing to the technical output. The role is highly collaborative and involves significant interaction with fellow team members, stakeholders, and leadership.
Fostering innovation and being a champion of standards and best practices are critical components here at Disney Entertainment and ESPN Technology organization. Therefore, the ideal candidate will also need to be highly adaptable to changes and be able to pivot when required.
Responsibilities:

  • Work on parallel projects, reviewing product, service, and infrastructure designs with an 'SRE lens,' identifying reliability risks to address critical and strategic issues and complex problems.
  • Build software applications across multiple platforms in response to the needs of stakeholders.
  • Contribute wide-reaching improvements in stability, usability and performance to systems and services.
  • Set technical direction and strategy, driving technology adoption across organizations.
  • Produce technical designs and documentation, and inform product decisions that anticipate, as best as possible, technical issues across various business initiatives and launches.
  • Support and mentor engineering teams, including Reliability Engineers, with SRE principles and best practices.
  • Serve as a key member of the recruitment panel, performing screenings and resume reviews, ensuring a continued high standard of our engineering workforce.
  • Serve as a technical translator, digesting product and business requirements and defining technical requirements.
  • Promote and facilitate team building and social activities within the teams.


Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years within the Reliability Engineering field.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent training or work experience.
  • Well-versed with Reliability Engineering principles, patterns, and best practices.
  • Ability to understand the business domain from both a technical and product viewpoint.
  • 7+ Years experience working with AWS Cloud Infrastructure and Resources.
  • 7+ Years experience in designing and implementing automation tools.
  • 7+ Years experience running and monitoring large scale distributed systems.
  • Proficient in Python and/or Go.
  • Well-versed with modern infrastructure services and concepts such as containerization, distributed systems and microservices.
  • Experience designing and implementing automation tools.
  • Well-versed in Software Engineering principles and patterns.
  • Experience working with globally distributed teams.
  • Experience as a coach and mentor within a business environment.
  • Experience working within an Agile environment.


The hiring range for this position in Bristol/LA/Glendale/Santa Monica is $180,700 to $242,300 per year, in NYC/Seattle is $189,300 to $253,800, and in San Francisco is $197,900 to $265,400. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
