The Role:

The Therapeutic Research team is seeking a self-motivated Principal Scientist, Therapeutic Biology, to lead strategic discovery efforts and advance novel therapeutics at Generate Biomedicines. They will be a creative, out-of-the box thinker and will play a key role in identifying innovative opportunities for applying our Generate platform towards building the therapeutic pipeline. Specifically, they will be our leader on immunogenicity, thoughtfully integrating immunology understanding, our platform, and experience in drug development towards the development of novel protein therapeutics. We are searching for a collaborative self-starter who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. This role requires staying abreast of emerging trends and advancements in immunology/immunogenicity, contributing to our company’s shared scientific knowledge through presentations, and fostering collaboration across research teams. The candidate should have a sustained record of being a strategic thinker and thoughtful people leader who can successfully lead programs into the clinic. This role may require spending 10-20% of the time at the bench. 

Here's how you will contribute:

• Play a key role in evaluating novel targets and mechanisms and contribute to prioritization of discovery-stage programs in alignment with functional and organizational goals.  

• Develop and oversee end-to-end immunogenicity strategies, leading cross-functional immunogencity working groups, including in vitro and ex vivo evaluations, to inform molecule design, selection, and progression. 

• Guide development and interpretation of immunogenicity assays (ADA, Nab, T-cell assays, cytokine release, etc.). 

• Manage external collaborations with academic groups, CROs, and biotech/pharma partners 

• Author scientific reports, patents, and manuscripts; contribute to regulatory documentation as needed. 

• Provide mentorship and technical leadership to junior scientists  

The Ideal Candidate will have:

• PhD in Immunology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry or related discipline with 8+ years of related experience in biopharma. Exceptional candidates with 6-8 years of relevant experience will also be considered as a Senior Scientist II. 

• Prior experience with leading discovery biology projects in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting. 

• Deep understanding of immune tolerance, T-cell epitope mapping, antigen presentation with experience in human primary cell-based immunological assay development. 

• Strong track record in the discovery and development of new protein-based therapies with a solid understanding of immunogenicity and its importance in developing novel protein therapeutics. 

• Ability to set strategy and lead through planning, designing, and executing multiple complex research projects that support corporate scientific goals and priorities.  

• Demonstrated ability to lead teams, direct and indirect, and build strong relationships with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to align strategies and drive successful outcomes. 

• A strong leader with excellent communication skills, organizational and personal savvy, stakeholder management skills and a highly collaborative mindset. 

• Strong publication record and/or patent portfolio is highly desirable.
