Job Title: Principal Robotics Systems Architect – Vision, Sensor Fusion & Intelligent Motion

Location: Wilmington, MA
 

Position Overview
Analog Devices' Advanced Physical Technology (APT) group is building next-generation intelligent robotic motion systems that tightly integrate sensing, perception, decision-making, and actuation.

We are seeking a Principal Robotics Systems Architect to lead the development of robotic perception and action platforms spanning vision systems, sensor fusion, motion control, edge AI, and intelligent manipulation.

In this role, you will architect complete robotic systems that transform multimodal sensor inputs - including RGB cameras, depth vision sensors, and force/torque/tactile sensors - into robust autonomous actions. You will work across perception, motor control, embedded computing, AI, and electromechanical systems to create high-performance robotic platforms for real-world applications.

This position is ideal for hands-on robotics leaders who have built and deployed robots from concept to field deployment and possess deep expertise in integrating vision, sensing, decision-making, and actuation into a cohesive robotic system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect end-to-end robotic systems integrating sensing, perception, planning, and actuation.
  • Lead the development of multimodal sensor fusion solutions combining RGB vision, depth sensing, and force/torque/tactile sensing.
  • Define system architectures for vision-guided manipulation, dexterous robotic hands, autonomous motion, and robot-environment interaction.
  • Partner with AI, controls, firmware, hardware, and mechanical teams to develop real-time perception-to-action architectures.
  • Drive robot hardware/software co-design across sensors, embedded processing, communication networks, motor drives, and actuators.
  • Lead system integration, validation, and field testing of advanced robotic platforms.
  • Mentor multidisciplinary engineering teams and drive alignment across functions.

Ideal Experience & Skills

  • Hands-on experience developing and deploying commercial robotic systems.
  • Strong systems engineering skills spanning hardware, software, sensing, controls, and mechanical integration.
  • Deep background in robotic perception, sensor fusion, and intelligent control.
  • Experience integrating RGB cameras, depth sensors, force/torque/tactile sensors, and motor drives and encoders.
  • Demonstrated success building vision-guided or autonomous robotic systems.
  • Experience with robotic manipulation, robotic hands, collaborative robots, or humanoid systems.
  • Working knowledge of NVIDIA Jetson platforms, computer vision, embedded systems, and edge AI.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and deliver complex robotic platforms from concept to deployment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of industry experience developing robotic, automation, or autonomous systems.
  • Experience designing and integrating complex systems involving sensing, embedded computing, control, and actuation.
  • Strong understanding of robotic perception, sensor fusion, control systems, and system integration.
  • Demonstrated success delivering robust systems from prototype through field deployment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing vision-guided robotic manipulation systems.
  • Expertise in multimodal sensor fusion architecture.
  • Experience with NVIDIA Jetson, multi-core MCU/NPU platforms, Isaac Sim, or related robotics frameworks.
  • Background in robotic hands, manipulators, humanoid robots, mobile robots, or autonomous machines.
  • Familiarity with motor control, servo systems, BLDC/PMSM drives, and power electronics.
  • MCU motor-control expertise: advanced timers, center-aligned PWM, ADC-injected sampling, DMA, capture/compare, and fault handling; interrupt latency management and fixed-point math.

The expected wage range for a new hire into this position is $157,080 to $227,460.
  • Actual wage offered may vary depending on work location, experience, education, training, external market data, internal pay equity, or other bona fide factors.

  • This position qualifies for a discretionary performance-based bonus which is based on personal and company factors.

Skills Required

  • MS/PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Mechatronics, or related field
  • Extensive, recent experience in embedded controls and hardware for robotic motor drives or complex power electronics systems
  • Demonstrated success delivering innovative motion platforms with closed-loop validation and field deployment
  • Deep expertise in system-level hardware design for motor drives (BLDC/PMSM), power electronics, and multi-modal sensor integration
  • Strong understanding of firmware/embedded development for real-time control and diagnostics
  • Track record delivering motion hardware meeting reliability, safety (functional safety), and compliance requirements including EMI/EMC
  • Leadership experience architecting or scaling advanced robotic hardware platforms and actuation systems (GaN FET-based inverters, actuation design, sensor fusion)
  • MCU motor-control expertise: advanced timers, center-aligned PWM, ADC-injected sampling, DMA pipelines, capture/compare, interrupt latency management, fixed-point math
  • Power electronics and drivers: three-phase inverter design, gate driver tuning, snubber design, current sensing topologies, DC link and motor-side filtering
  • GaN-specific layout and drive techniques, Miller mitigation, and double-pulse testing experience
  • Expertise in FOC and commutation algorithm design/tuning, sensorless observers, system identification, and automated verification (e.g., Simulink Test, scripted benches)
  • Experience producing documentation to support certification pathways
