The position exists to oversee and manage all activities related to the operation of the Allentown Pilot Plant and to support process development scale-up activities across the organization. The position involves scheduling of the facility, managing staffing, developing and managing an operating budget, EH&S review of all new projects requested, safe operation and contribution to process definition including critical process data collection, development of a CAPEX roadmap to meet strategic R&D goals and generation of IP related to process development. The incumbent interfaces with lead researchers across multiple business lines to understand key technical details and product requirements. Planning and execution of physical modifications to the equipment as well as interfacing with supply chain to manage logistics is a key aspect of this position. This position is also responsible for external interfaces with universities for recruiting and project development, industry partners to evaluate new process technology and customers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts the operation of the pilot plant to support process development and scale-up of new products and productivity programs. Overall operation includes 10-12 process vessels, distillation, filtration, solids processing and analytical equipment. Generates IP from novel process development and documents key knowledge in formal research reports.
- Manages interface with research teams across multiple BLs within the region defining project requirements, timing and technical fit. Provides feedback and overall management of project execution within the pilot plant. Defines new capability requirements to meet internal customer needs and proposes options for providing the capability.
- Accountable for the EH&S of the pilot plant operation including:. Process safety including conducting process hazard reviews. Storage and disposal of hazardous waste. Compliance with environmental permit requirements .Overseeing worker safety
- Developing and executing capital projects serving in the Project Responsible role for major capital projects (>500T euros)
- Interfacing with external equipment vendors to identify and evaluate new process equipment for projects. This includes specifying equipment requirements and conducting field tests.
REQUIREMENTS
- PhD or Masters in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or BS in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 15 years of production or process development experience
- Minimum of 10 years of experience including working in a chemical plant or pilot plant operation, working in a chemical laboratory environment and project leadership experience
- Experience with new product scale-up and batch operations. Demonstrated ability to transfer technology from lab to commercial scale.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills
- Ability to effectively lead and contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams Good understanding of analytical tools and methodologies
- Knowledge of process safety management systems and PHA methodology Good understanding of equipment maintenance requirements
- Working knowledge of process control systems and instrumentation
