Principal Platform Engineer – AWS Cloud (Data Protection & Storage)
Your Impact and Contribution
As a Principal Platform Engineer, you will be at the forefront of our database and DevSecOps strategy, responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining our database environments. You will play a key role in automating processes, enhancing security through DevSecOps practices, deploying monitoring tools, and maintaining high-quality documentation to ensure our infrastructure remains robust, resilient, and reliable.
As part of the Data Protection & Storage (DPSS) crew, you’ll work with a highly skilled team of engineers and collaborate in an environment that fosters innovation and upholds engineering excellence. In this solution-focused team, you will contribute to the ongoing delivery of world-class outcomes.
The Role
This Principal Platform Engineer role is a hands-on technical leadership position specialising in backup, restore, and cyber resilience within AWS. You will be accountable for the design and evolution of scalable, secure, and highly resilient backup platforms, with a strong focus on Commvault, AWS-native services, and air-gapped cyber recovery environments.
You will set technical direction, establish repeatable patterns, uplift engineering standards, and actively mentor other engineers across the DPSS and broader cloud platform community.
Key Responsibilities
Design and operate enterprise backup and restore platforms using Commvault on AWS
Engineer air-gapped and isolated recovery environments to support ransomware resilience
Build and optimise restore strategies, including cross-account recovery
Develop AWS infrastructure using infrastructure as code and DevSecOps practices
Work at expert level across AWS services including S3, EC2, RDS, CodeCommit, CodeBuild, CodeArtifact, Guard Duty, Wiz and others
Strengthen security, reliability, and observability of backup and recovery platforms
Provide principal-level technical leadership, design assurance, and mentoring, influencing platform direction across multiple squads and crews
Partner closely with security and risk stakeholders to uplift cyber resilience, threat modelling, and recovery assurance
Design repeatable testing strategies for backup integrity, restore confidence, and disaster recovery scenarios
Mentor and uplift engineers through coaching, design reviews, and shared engineering patterns
Accelerate value delivery and innovation by improving engineering velocity through the use of AI
Contribute to strategic technical decisions, trade-offs, and long-term platform roadmaps
What We’re Looking For
Strong experience with Commvault backup and restore in enterprise environments
Proven delivery of air-gapped cyber backup or isolated recovery solutions
Deep AWS expertise, including RDS snapshot-based recovery
Expert-level capability across AWS cloud, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code
Strong security mindset with experience embedding DevSecOps and compliance controls
Ability to influence technical direction beyond a single squad or team, aligned to Principal Platform Engineer expectations
