The Principal Platform Engineer – Storage Engineering is a senior technical authority responsible for architecting, implementing, and optimising enterprise grade storage platforms across CBA’s on-prem and cloud environments. Operating at the intersection of architecture, engineering excellence, and strategic leadership, this role drives storage platform direction, ensures performance and resilience at scale, and mentors engineering teams in delivering robust, modern storage solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the architecture, design, and delivery of enterprise storage platforms, including block, file, object, and backup storage solutions across on-prem and cloud environments.
Act as the principal technical lead and solution architect, guiding teams through complex storage deployments, migrations, and optimisation initiatives.
Own the technical strategy and roadmap for storage services, ensuring alignment to broader platform engineering and cloud transformation strategies.
Collaborate closely with vendors, engineering squads, and internal stakeholders to ensure performance, scalability, and seamless integration of storage platforms.
Drive adoption of automation and infrastructure as code practices using tools such as Terraform and Ansible to streamline provisioning and lifecycle management.
Ensure storage platforms incorporate robust observability, telemetry, and monitoring, leveraging technologies such as Grafana and Prometheus.
Maintain high standards of resilience, availability, compliance, and operational excellence across all storage services.
Provide technical mentorship and leadership across storage engineering and operations teams, uplifting capability and driving best practice engineering.
Play a key role in major incident and problem management, including diagnosing complex storage issues and guiding recovery efforts in critical scenarios.
Required Skills & Experience
Significant experience in platform, infrastructure, or storage engineering at enterprise scale.
Deep technical expertise across enterprise storage and backup technologies, including VMAX, Data Domain, Commvault, Netapp, ObjectScale and related enterprise storage arrays.
Extensive experience designing and implementing high-performance, highly available storage architectures in large, complex environments.
Strong understanding of AWS and cloud-based storage patterns
Strong experience with VMware on-prem environments
Proficiency with automation and IaC (Terraform, Ansible) for consistent and repeatable storage platform provisioning.
Experience with observability tooling and integrating monitoring into platform design.
Demonstrated success in leading technical teams, influencing architecture decisions, and delivering complex engineering solutions.
Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and the ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy and integrity.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
Experience with additional enterprise backup and storage products (e.g., Networker, Veeam).
Exposure to DevSecOps practices, API development, and automation-driven operational models.
Experience with enterprise infrastructure platforms such as ECS, VxRail, Nutanix, and hyperconverged environments.
Strong background working in largescale enterprise environments with vendor engagement and multiplatform integration.
