Position Overview
Analog Devices’ Advanced Physical Technology (APT) group is seeking a Principal Motion System Engineer to architect and lead the development of next-generation robotic motion systems. In this high-impact role, you’ll drive the system-level hardware design and integration of advanced motor drive, actuation, and sensing solutions for real-world robotics applications. We’re looking for someone with a proven track record delivering innovative motion systems at scale, ideally in leading robotics or automation companies.
You’ll set the direction for high-performance robotic BLDC/PMSM drive hardware, power electronics (including GaN FET-based motor drivers), and sensor fusion. You will partner closely with cross-disciplinary teams from concept through productization. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of robotics at the system level with ADI’s strong IC solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and deliver system-level motion hardware for robotics platforms, integrating motor drives, advanced power electronics (including GaN), and sensors.
- Lead the hardware/firmware co-design for high-performance actuation, including HW structures, embedded control, safety, and diagnostic features.
- Set technical strategy and best practices for system integration, validation, and robust field deployment in demanding environments.
- Define and implement requirements, interfaces, and system safety cases in partnership with firmware, software, and mechanical teams.
- Mentor and collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure seamless hardware-software integration and verification.
- Drive innovation in EMI/EMC mitigation, reliability, and certification for motion subsystems.
Ideal Experience & Skills
- Significant hands-on experience developing robotic motion systems in industry-leading companies.
- Deep expertise in system-level hardware design for motor drives (BLDC/PMSM), power electronics (with GaN FET-based topologies), and multi-modal sensor integration.
- Proven ability to translate product vision into robust, production-quality architectures and platforms.
- Strong understanding of firmware/embedded development for real-time control and diagnostics.
- Track record of delivering motion hardware that meets stringent reliability, safety, and compliance requirements (including functional safety and EMI/EMC).
- Leadership in system integration, verification, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Minimum Qualifications
- MS/PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Mechatronics, or related field.
- Extensive, recent experience in embedded controls and hardware for robotic motor drives or complex power electronics systems.
- Demonstrated success delivering innovative motion platforms with closed-loop validation and field deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Leadership roles in architecting or scaling advanced robotic hardware platforms with real-world experience with GaN FET-based inverters, actuation mechanism design, and sensor fusion.
- MCU motor-control expertise: Advanced timers, center-aligned PWM, ADC-injected sampling, DMA, capture/compare, and fault inputs; interrupt latency management and fixed-point math.
- Power electronics & drivers: Three-phase inverter design, gate driver tuning, snubber design, current sensing topologies, DC link design, and motor-side filtering.
- GaN (Plus): Layout and drive techniques for high dv/dt switching, Miller mitigation, and double‑pulse testing.
- Advanced expertise in:
- FOC and commutation algorithm design and tuning (simulation, HIL, dyno).
- PWM/ADC synchronization, DMA pipelines, and real-time control loops on MAX/STM MCUs.
- Three-phase inverter design, gate driver configuration, and board bring-up.
- System identification, parameter estimation, and implementation of sensorless observers.
- Robust fault handling, diagnostics, and EMI/EMC mitigation.
- Automated verification (e.g., Simulink Test, scripted test benches).
- Documentation supporting certification pathways.
