The IMRIS Surgical Theatre enables intraoperative imaging directly within operating rooms. The Company also designs and manufactures proprietary head fixation devices, imaging coils and OR tables for use in this unique and multifunctional intraoperative environment. It is estimated that over 70,000 patients have benefited from lifesaving or life-extending procedures performed in an IMRIS Surgical Theatre. IMRIS will continue to integrate new intraoperative imaging technologies and shape the future of neurosurgery in operating rooms worldwide.

We are currently searching for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our team.  This role will be performed both on-site and remotely as necessary, but is based in the Greater Twin Cities area at our Chaska, MN headquarters.  Please note:  There is no relocation offered for this role.  The ideal candidate should reside in the Greater Twin Cities area.

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, this role is responsible for the design and development of mechanical systems in the IMRIS product line. This role will apply their mechanical experience and develop new skills in the integration and development of technology for future IMRIS products as well as the continuous improvement of our current product line.

The Principal Mechanical Engineer role includes research, design, evaluation and documentation of medical products and equipment to meet project goals and product requirements. The role includes leading mechanical design activities within the IMRIS product development process from initial design to final production stages, including technical team leadership and project management of technical work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop recommendations for the design and development of medical device products, including changes to existing products.
  • Technical Leader, which includes leading a multidisciplinary team and influencing design direction outside the mechanical engineering team.
  • Subject matter expert on one or more of IMRIS’ product lines.
  • Lead the transition of system requirements to mechanical subsystem requirements in complex designs.
  • Create 3D models, sketches, designs, layouts, drawings and other specifications for product definition.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with a cross-functional team to establish robust, manufacturable product designs that meet requirements.
  • Maintain detailed and comprehensive records of all inventive ideas, designs, and basic improvements.
  • Estimate costs and time requirements for various designs and design activities.
  • Participate in cross-functional product risk analysis.
  • Create the 3D models, simulations, technical drawings, schematics, and technical analyses to document new designs.
  • Specify system components and direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Participate in design transfer of IMRIS products to both external vendors and IMRIS manufacturing, service and installation.
  • Accurately document product issues for future reference and problem resolution.
  • Verify conformity to product specifications, design standards and external requirements.
  • Lead and complete product lifecycle design changes through standard engineering change order documentation.
  • May lead engineering prototype builds as well as assist in verification and validation activities.
  • Subject matter expert on one or more of IMRIS’ product lines.

  • Reports to the Electrical and Software Engineering Manager

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 6 years industry experience in mechanical product design
  • Technical leader experience of cross-functional product design leading 2-5 people.

Abilities

  • Ability to lead root cause analysis on product deficiency issues
  • Ability to lead FMEA on mechanical systems
  • Demonstrated machine design capabilities. Robust knowledge of machine component manufacturing processes including mill, lathe and sheet metal forming
  • Team oriented – values synergy of group efforts and invests the effort required to create group solutions.
  • Driven by a sense of mission and clearly articulates goals to achieve specific results. Takes the initiative to complete important tasks.
  • Knowledge of tolerance analysis and ability to apply it appropriately to IMRIS products
  • Demonstrated capability implementing GD&T drawing documentation
  • Expert at engineering design using 3D modeling
  • Experience performing FEA structural analysis

Preferred

  • SolidWorks 3D CAD experience preferred
  • Knowledge of FDA QSR, ISO 14385 and UL 60601 preferred
  • Knowledge of composite structures preferred
